COVID-19 News: Researchers and variant hunters around the world are carefully monitoring the COVID-19 situation in India, the land that gave us the Delta variant after a new worrisome JN.1 spawn spotting an extremely high number of mutations was detected.

A Chinese scientist cum variant hunter from the Dept of Computer Science, Tsinghua University-China was the first to identify this worrisome sub-lineage from sequences uploaded to GISAID platform about 38 hours ago.

This worrisome sub-lineage contained multiple mutations that are concerned with immune evasion including the spike mutations L455S, F456L, V1104L and the NSP3 mutations T1465I G17334T
It also contained the Orf1a:T2283I mutation and also the mutations C7113T,T22928C,T3565C
Some of the other mutations are possibly linked with enhanced pathogenesis and increased virulence.
The initial sequences were from Bengaluru, Karnataka-India and from Pune, Maharashtra-India:

All were from hospitalized patients.
Another, researcher who has been monitoring the upload of sequences on GISAID had also confirmed the presence of these new worrisome sub-lineages.

As of today, a total of 11 such sequences have been identified, all originating form India.
Scientists are monitoring to see if this variant had the relevant viral fitness to become predominant in circulation.

Meanwhile the emergence of such a variant has also cause alarms among many as India which has a reputation of concealing and lying about the true COVID-19 situation in the country could actually be providing the “playground” for the JN.1 to evolve and spawn some dangerous variants as it has a large population with varying degrees of immunity and also many immunocompromised individuals and individuals who are also carrying other pathogens or disease and are not even aware of their health status!
