Severe cases and deaths climb sharply
Taiwan is facing a renewed COVID-19 surge, with health authorities reporting 72 new domestic severe cases and 14 deaths between August 4 and 10, marking a concerning acceleration in serious disease. The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control said severe cases increased from 62 during the preceding seven days, while deaths jumped from three to 14.

Medical visits continue rising
The CDC recorded 24,645 COVID-19-related outpatient and emergency visits during Week 31, representing a 27.6 percent increase from 19,307 visits previously reported. This Thailand

The burden is increasing nationwide. Compared with the previous week, visits rose 63.6 percent in eastern Taiwan, 44.7 percent in the southern region and 38.3 percent in the northern region. Children aged zero to four experienced a particularly steep 58.5 percent increase.
Elderly patients dominate severe outcomes
Among the 72 newly reported severe cases, 73.6 percent involved people aged 65 or older, 79.2 percent had chronic illnesses. All 14 recent deaths involved people aged at least 65, while 13 had chronic conditions.
New variant landscape emerges
PQ.16.1.1 now accounts for 73.7 percent of recently monitored domestic variants, followed by NB.1.8.1 at 21.1 percent and XFG at 5.3 percent. Globally, positivity is rising, particularly in Europe and Africa, while NB.1.8.1, XFG and JN.1 remain prominent internationally.
What the latest data signals
Taiwan’s outbreak remains firmly in an upward phase, and the simultaneous increases in medical visits, hospitalizations, severe complications and deaths indicate that vulnerable populations remain at substantial risk. The striking concentration of severe disease among older adults, chronically ill individuals and those without current-season vaccination warrants continued surveillance as viral circulation intensifies.
