French Woman Evacuated from Cruise Ship and Flown to Paris Test Positive for Hantavirus

Medical News: A French woman evacuated from the cruise ship MV Hondius became the center of growing international concern after testing positive for hantavirus after being flown back to Paris. French Health Minister Stéphanie Rist confirmed that the woman’s condition worsened overnight after she developed symptoms during the repatriation flight from Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

The French passenger was among five citizens evacuated from the expedition cruise vessel after an outbreak linked to the Andes strain of hantavirus triggered a multinational emergency response. Health authorities across Europe and the United States quickly moved to isolate passengers and monitor anyone who may have been exposed.

French Passenger’s Health Declines During Evacuation
According to French officials, the woman initially appeared stable before showing symptoms mid-flight as the evacuation operation unfolded. Upon arrival in Paris, she was immediately hospitalized for specialized care as medical teams assessed the severity of her infection.

The evacuation mission involved passengers from more than 20 countries being escorted off the vessel by personnel wearing full-body protective suits and respiratory masks. The dramatic scenes at Tenerife underscored mounting fears surrounding the rare outbreak aboard the cruise ship.

French authorities have not disclosed the woman’s age or specific medical condition, but officials confirmed that her deteriorating health prompted heightened concern among public health agencies.

Americans Also Under Intensive Monitoring
In the United States, health authorities confirmed that one American passenger evacuated from the ship tested positive for hantavirus despite showing no symptoms, while another displayed mild symptoms. Both were flown to Nebraska alongside 15 other American passengers.

The infected traveler was transferred to the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit, a highly specialized isolation facility previously used during Ebola outbreaks and the COVID-19 pandemic. Other passengers were sent to the National Quarantine Unit for assessment and continuous monitoring.

This Medical News report highlights how global health agencies rapidly coordinated quarantine procedures to prevent any possibility of further spread.

WHO Claims Public Risk Remains Low
The World Health Organization stressed that the outbreak should not trigger panic. WHO Director-Gene ral Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized that hantavirus is very different from COVID-19 and that the overall public risk remains low.

Hantavirus is typically transmitted through exposure to rodent urine, saliva, or droppings. However, the Andes virus strain identified in the outbreak is notable because rare person-to-person transmission has previously been documented. Symptoms can emerge anywhere between one and eight weeks after exposure and may include fever, muscle pain, breathing difficulties, and severe respiratory complications.

WHO epidemiologist Maria van Kerkhove urged countries receiving passengers from the cruise ship to implement active daily monitoring, either through home isolation or specialized medical facilities.

International Evacuations Continue
Several nations, including Australia and the Netherlands, organized special flights to retrieve their citizens from Tenerife. Authorities said the evacuations were conducted not only to assist stranded passengers but also to ensure public health measures could be properly enforced in each home country.

The incident has drawn global attention because at least three people linked to the outbreak have already died, while additional former passengers have reportedly tested positive. Despite the alarming developments, experts maintain that widespread transmission remains unlikely due to the virus’s limited ability to spread between humans.

Public health officials continue tracing contacts and monitoring all repatriated passengers closely. The worsening condition of the French woman has become a sobering reminder that even rare infectious diseases can rapidly escalate into international medical emergencies when outbreaks occur in confined environments such as cruise ships.
