Rapid Geographic Expansion Fuels Public Health Concerns
What began in the Mongbwalu health zone of Ituri Province has now spread into 49 health zones across five provinces—Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé and Tshopo. During epidemiological week 30 alone, authorities documented a record 567 new cases and 296 deaths, reflecting the fastest pace of transmission since the outbreak began. WHO noted that some reported increases also resulted from expanded surveillance, laboratory testing and data reconciliation, although widespread community transmission remains the primary driver.
Ituri Province Remains the Epicenter
Ituri continues to bear the greatest burden, accounting for 88 percent of all confirmed cases and 82.6 percent of reported deaths nationwide. Bunia, Rwampara, Mongbwalu, Nizi, Lita and Nyankunde remain the hardest-hit health zones. Meanwhile, 17,863 contacts have been identified for monitoring, with active follow-up rates ranging from approximately 66 to 81 percent depending on the province. Healthcare workers remain heavily affected, with 151 confirmed infections and 44 deaths, underscoring persistent infection prevention challenges in medical facilities.
Conflict, Displacement and Cross-Border Risks Complicate Response
WHO warns that insecurity, attacks on healthcare facilities, population displacement and extensive cross-border movement are severely hampering outbreak control. Crowded displacement camps, disrupted surveillance and restricted access for response teams continue to create conditions favorable for ongoing virus transmission. Although Uganda officially declared its Bundibugyo virus outbreak over on 28 July after completing the required observation period without local transmission, WHO cautions that the country remains vulnerable to imported cases from neighboring DRC.
WHO Calls for Major Scale-Up in Response
WHO and Congolese health authorities are expanding surveillance, laboratory testing, clinical care, infection prevention, contact tracing, logistics and community engagement. However, the agency stresses that current efforts remain insufficient given the outbreak's accelerating spread, while an updated international risk assessment is being prepared ahead of the sche
duled IHR Emergency Committee meeting on 18 August.
The rapidly expanding outbreak demonstrates how humanitarian crises, insecurity and strained healthcare systems can accelerate Ebola transmission.
