Medical News: COVID-19 Positivity Edges Higher Despite Overall Low Activity
The latest surveillance data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), covering week 30 of 2026 (20 July to 26 July), shows that COVID-19 activity remains at baseline levels across England, although several key indicators are moving upward. According to this Thailand Medical News report, the most notable increase was recorded in GP swabbing, where SARS-CoV-2 positivity reached 3%, rising from 2.6% in the previous week.

UK COVID-19 test positivity climbs to 3% as health officials continue monitoring gradual increases in SARS-CoV-2 activity

Laboratory Findings Show Gradual Increase
Hospital laboratory surveillance also detected a modest rise in PCR positivity. The positivity rate in hospital settings increased to 1.1% on the most recent Sunday, compared with 0.9% a week earlier. While emergency department attendances for COVID-19-like illness remained low, these incremental increases suggest that community transmission is slowly expanding, even though overall activity is still categorized as baseline.

Hospital Admissions Remain Limited
Hospital admissions linked to COVID-19 continued to stay low. The weekly admission rate was 0.15 per 100,000 population, compared with 0.13 per 100,000 during the previous reporting period. UKHSA emphasized that healthcare pressures from COVID-19 remain minimal, but surveillance continues to monitor changing trends as positivity rates gradually rise.

Global Situation Warrants Close Monitoring
Beyond the United Kingdom, COVID-19 infections are increasing across the United States, China, Russia, Japan, Taiwan, and several Southeast Asian nations. The simultaneous rise in multiple regions suggests that viral transmission remains active internationally and reinforces the importance of continuous surveillance to detect any sustained acceleration in cases or the emergence of new variants that could alter current public health risks.
