Medical News: Malaysia is quietly facing a new wave of COVID-19 infections, with a concerning rise in the number of cases and an alarming positivity rate of 51 percent. While official case numbers may seem low on paper, health experts warn that the actual spread of the virus is likely much wider due to limited testing being done across the country.
COVID-19 Infections Silently Rising in Malaysia Fast with Positivity Rates Reaching 51 Percent Now!
According to the Malaysian Health Ministry, the total number of COVID-19 cases recorded so far in 2025 stands at 21,738. Weekly averages had remained stable at around 900 cases, but in Epidemiological Week 24 — which spans June 8 to June 15 — reported cases jumped sharply to 3,379. That’s a 14 percent increase from the previous week’s 2,961 cases. However, experts caution that these numbers may not reflect the true scale of the outbreak due to under-testing. In fact, this
Medical News report highlights how the current positivity rate — the percentage of people who test positive out of the total tested — has now reached a staggering 51 percent, indicating that many more infections are likely going undetected.
First COVID-19 Death of 2025 Confirmed
In a sobering development, Malaysia has recorded its first COVID-19 death of 2025. The Health Ministry confirmed that the deceased was a person with serious existing health issues, including heart disease and diabetes. The individual had also not received their second booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The death occurred during Epidemiological Week 24.
While this marks a significant drop from the 57 COVID-19-related deaths reported in 2024, the ministry says that it serves as a reminder for vulnerable individuals to remain cautious. The last recorded death before this one was on May 26, 2024.
Hospitalizations and ICU Cases Also on the Rise
In the same week, the Malaysian authorities claimed that only six patients were admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) due to COVID-19 complications, all of whom had underlying health issues. It was said that all patients have since been discharged from ICU, with four recovering enough to return home and two being transferred to general wards for continued care.
Despite the official line that the situation is “under control,” the rapid increase in cases — especially the the high percentage spike in Week 24 alone — has many experts urging the public to stay vigilant. The combination of low testing, high positivity rates, and silent community transmission suggests that COVID-19 is far from over in Malaysia.
