Medical News: Natural Neuroprotective Properties of Cloves Uncovered
Scientists from the Institute of Biostructures and Bioimaging (Italian National Council for Research, Italy), the Department of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Molise (Italy), the Scientific and Production Center “Armbiotechnology” (Armenia), and Yerevan State University (Armenia), have uncovered new evidence that clove—a common kitchen spice—contains powerful compounds that may help prevent or slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Clove spice contains natural compounds that may help protect the brain and slow Alzheimer’s progression, researchers say

This Medical News report highlights how the humble clove (Syzygium aromaticum), long used in traditional medicines, is now being investigated as a potential natural treatment for neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers found that clove contains several key bioactive compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and brain-protective effects.

Powerful Natural Compounds for Brain Health
The main active substance in clove is eugenol, which can neutralize damaging free radicals, reduce inflammation, and protect brain cells. Other compounds in clove such as β-caryophyllene, gallic acid, quercetin, luteolin, and tannic acid also offer similar protective effects. Some of these compounds can even cross the blood-brain barrier, a crucial requirement for any treatment targeting brain diseases.

Laboratory and animal studies demonstrated that clove extracts reduced the buildup of harmful amyloid-beta plaques in the brain, improved memory, and supported neuron survival. In particular, clove was shown to restore mitochondrial health and balance important enzymes like SIRT1, which play key roles in aging and brain function.

Amino Acids in Clove Also Play a Role
Besides phytochemicals, clove is rich in both essential and non-essential amino acids such as glutamic acid, proline, tyrosine, and arginine. These compounds support brain metabolism, neurotransmitter production, and immune health. The flower buds and fruits of the plant showed the highest levels of these beneficial nutrients.

Traditional Use Meets Modern Science
Clove has been used in Ayurveda and other herbal traditions to treat infections, toothaches, and digestion problems. This new research suggests that its regular consumption or use in formulated supplements could have far-reaching benefits for cognitive health, especially in aging populations. Researchers even noted that clove oil improved memory and reduced depressive symptoms in animal studies with minimal side effects.

How It Works Against Alzheimer Disease
Clove extract fights two of the main drivers of Alzheimer’s disease—oxidative stress and inflammation. It blocks harmful brain cell inflammation, stops the formation of sticky plaques in the b rain, and supports nerve cell growth. The researchers also tested it in models of stress-induced memory loss and brain damage and found it to be effective in restoring memory function.

Important Summary
This study offers strong evidence that clove contains multiple natural compounds that work together to protect the brain. These substances reduce inflammation, fight oxidative damage, help remove toxic plaques, and promote nerve health. While more clinical trials in humans are still needed, clove shows great promise as a natural aid in fighting Alzheimer’s and possibly other neurodegenerative disorders.

The study findings were published on a preprint server and are currently being peer reviewed.
