COVID-19 activity increased across Japan in early September, with health authorities recording 7,777 cases through the country’s sentinel surveillance system during the week of August 31 to September 6, 2026.
Japan recorded 7,777 sentinel-reported COVID-19 cases as the national weekly rate climbed to 2.08 patients per medical facility.
The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare reported a national average of 2.08 COVID-19 patients per designated medical institution, up from 1.47 the previous week. That represents a weekly increase of about 41%.
Cases Rise but Remain Far Below 2025
Despite the latest increase, COVID-19 activity remained substantially below the level recorded during the same period last year. Japan reported 31,329 cases and 8.12 patients per sentinel facility in the corresponding week of 2025.

Thailand Medical News report also highlights significant regional differences. Tochigi recorded the highest rate at 5.64 patients per facility, followed by Niigata at 5.27, Nagano at 4.40 and Shimane at 4.30. Tokyo stood at 1.84, while Osaka reported 1.63.
What the Numbers Actually Mean
Japan’s figures are based on reports from designated sentinel medical institutions rather than a count of every infection occurring nationwide. The data therefore provide an indicator of infection trends and should not be interpreted as Japan having only 7,777 COVID-19 infections during the week. The figures are also preliminary and may later be revised.
Conclusions
Japan’s latest surveillance data show COVID-19 infections moving upward after several lower weeks, although reported activity remains dramatically below last year’s level. Continued weekly monitoring will help determine whether the increase develops into a sustained nationwide trend or proves temporary.
