Medical News: Taiwan Closely Monitors Rising COVID-19 Activity
Taiwanese health authorities are warning that the country could face a summer increase in COVID-19 infections after surveillance data showed virus activity has risen for three consecutive weeks. While overall case numbers remain far below those recorded in previous years, officials from Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say the steady upward trend, together with increasing global activity, warrants close monitoring. This
Medical News report highlights the latest developments as authorities strengthen preparedness and encourage additional preventive measures among vulnerable populations.
Taiwan issues summer COVID-19 alert as infections rise for consecutive weeks
Taiwanese CDC spokesperson Tseng Shu-hui said respiratory disease activity in Taiwan remains relatively low overall, with influenza and several other respiratory viruses continuing to dominate. Nevertheless, COVID-19 infections in Taiwan have shown a gradual resurgence since June after remaining relatively stable earlier in the year. Monthly COVID-19 cases during 2026 ranged between approximately 18,000 and 26,000, peaking in March before leveling off. However, officials noted that infections have now increased modestly for last few consecutive weeks.
Data indicates that more than 20,000 COVID-19 cases were reported during May. Although this represents a noticeable increase compared to recent weeks, it remains dramatically lower than the more than 440,000 cases reported during the same month last year. From January through May, Taiwan recorded just over 100,000 COVID-19 cases, a sharp decline from the more than 760,000 infections documented during the corresponding period in the previous year.
Domestic Cases Edge Higher as High-Risk Patients Remain Most Vulnerable
Taiwan's latest surveillance data mirrors the cautious trend observed internationally. During the week of May 31 to June 6, outpatient and emergency department visits related to COVID-19 reached approximately 1,000, representing a 4.1 percent increase from the previous week and marking the third consecutive weekly rise. Figures have been rising in late June and early July though official updates have not been made public yet.
Health officials also confirmed five new domestic cases involving severe COVID-19 complications during the week of June 2 to June 8. Analysis of the severe cases revealed that 80 percent involved individuals aged 65 years or older, while an equal proportion had underlying medical conditions.
The Taiwanese CDC said weekly growth has remained relatively modest at around three to four percent, but emphasized that sustained increases deserve careful observation to determine whether Taiwan could enter another epidemic phase during the warmer months.
Current surveillance also shows that the predominant circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants in Taiwan are BA.3.2 and XFG, followed by NB.1.8.1.
Although Taiwan's COVID-19 burden remains comparatively low and Tai
wan’s case numbers are substantially below last year's levels, the consistent upward trajectory across multiple regions, combined with low vaccine uptake among vulnerable populations and the continued circulation of new variants, underscores the importance of maintaining surveillance and remaining prepared for a possible seasonal resurgence rather than becoming complacent.
