Aspirin-Eugenol Ester Shows Powerful Protection Against Alcohol Damaged Stomachs

Medical News: Understanding Why Alcohol Harms the Stomach
Heavy and long-term alcohol intake is a major cause of gastric injury, leading to painful ulcers, bleeding, and long-term digestive problems. Alcohol weakens the stomach’s protective lining, increases harmful oxidative stress, and triggers inflammation that destroys stomach cells. Over time, this damage can severely affect quality of life and raise the risk of serious complications.

A novel compound dramatically reduces alcohol induced stomach injury by blocking inflammation and oxidative damage

A New Compound with Promising Potential
Researchers have now identified a novel compound called aspirin eugenol ester, or AEE, that may offer strong protection against alcohol-induced stomach damage. This Medical News report highlights findings from scientists at the Lanzhou Institute of Husbandry and Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, along with the Key Laboratory of New Animal Drug Project of Gansu Province and the Key Laboratory of Veterinary Pharmaceutical Development under China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

How The Study Was Conducted
The research team used both laboratory-grown human stomach cells and animal models exposed to alcohol. They compared untreated groups with those given AEE at different doses. Advanced techniques were used to examine tissue damage, inflammation, antioxidant activity, and changes in key cellular pathways.

Key Protective Effects Observed
Alcohol exposure caused severe injury to stomach tissues, including bleeding, cell death, loss of protective mucus, and breakdown of tight junction proteins that hold the stomach lining together. In contrast, treatment with AEE significantly reduced visible ulcers, preserved mucus secretion, and maintained the integrity of the stomach barrier.

At the cellular level, AEE sharply reduced harmful reactive oxygen species while increasing natural antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase. It also lowered levels of inflammatory molecules like TNF alpha and interleukins that are known to worsen gastric injury.

Blocking A Dangerous Cell Death Pathway
One of the most important discoveries involved ferroptosis, a form of cell death driven by iron overload and lipid damage. Alcohol strongly activated this destructive process. AEE effectively blocked ferroptosis by restoring protective pathways linked to Nrf2 and GPX4, helping stomach cells survive and recover.

Better Results Than Standard Treatment
When compared with omeprazole, a commonly used gastric drug, AEE showed equal or superior protection in several measures, including reduced tissue damage and improved mucus production. Importantly, AEE did not harm other organs such as the liver or kidneys during the study.

Why These Findings Matter
This study suggests that aspirin eugenol ester works through multiple coordinated actions, reducing oxidative stress, calming inflammation, preventing ferroptosis, and restoring the stomach’s natural defenses. These combined effects make it a promising candidate for safer and more effective management of alcohol-related gastric injury.

Conclusion
Overall, the findings show that aspirin eugenol ester provides broad and powerful protection against alcohol-induced stomach damage. By targeting oxidative stress, inflammation, and ferroptosis at the same time, AEE offers a multi-layered defense that current treatments often lack. With further research, this compound could open the door to new preventive or therapeutic options for gastric injury linked to alcohol consumption.

The study findings were published in the peer reviewed journal: Antioxidants.
