More Cases of Ebola Detected in Uganda. DRC's Outbreak Likely to Cause Regional Spread but Not a Global Pandemic

Medical News: Uganda has confirmed three new Ebola infections, increasing the total number of confirmed cases in the current outbreak to five and raising fresh concerns about wider regional transmission linked to the escalating outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo DRC. Health officials are now intensifying emergency surveillance and contact tracing efforts as fears grow that the virus could spread further across East and Central Africa.

East and Central Africa

New Cases Include Driver and Healthcare Worker
According to Uganda’s Ministry of Health, two of the latest infections were identified among individuals directly connected to the country’s first confirmed Ebola patient. One of the infected persons is a driver who transported the original patient, while another is a healthcare worker exposed during treatment procedures.

Health authorities stated that both individuals had already been listed among known contacts and were under monitoring before testing positive. They are now receiving treatment in isolation while health teams continue tracing everyone who may have interacted with them.

The third confirmed case involves a woman from the DRC who crossed into Uganda while experiencing mild abdominal discomfort. Officials said she travelled from Arua near the border to Entebbe and later sought treatment at a private hospital in Kampala. Although her symptoms initially appeared to improve and she returned to the DRC, a follow-up investigation initiated after a pilot reported concerns eventually led to additional testing that confirmed Ebola infection.

WHO Raises Alarm Over Regional Risks
The World Health Organization WHO has revised its Ebola risk assessment, describing the threat level as “very high” within Uganda and “high” across the surrounding region, although the global threat remains low.

This Medical News report highlights that the Bundibugyo strain responsible for the outbreak remains particularly dangerous because there are currently no approved vaccines or virus-specific therapeutics available for this Ebola variant.

The WHO warned that delayed detection of infections, population movement across porous borders, and ongoing instability in parts of the DRC are increasing the possibility of further spread into neighboring countries. Uganda recently suspended public transport services connecting to the DRC after confirming earlier Ebola cases involving Congolese nationals.

DRC Outbreak Continues to Worsen
The DRC remains the center of the outbreak, with nearly 750 suspected infections and 177 suspected deaths already recorded. Aid workers operating in affected regions have reported severe shortages of protective equipment, laboratory supplies, and frontline medical resources.

Health experts believe the outbreak is unlikely to evolve into a global pandemic due to rapid international monitoring systems and improved containment protocols compared to previous Ebola crises. However, they caution that regional spread remains highly possible unless border controls, surveillance systems, and rapid isolation measures are strengthened immediately across affected areas.
