Ebola Surges in Congo with 72 New Cases in 24 Hours, Bringing Total Confirmed Cases to 782 and 181 Deaths

Medical News: The Democratic Republic of Congo is confronting a dramatic worsening of its latest Ebola outbreak after health authorities confirmed 72 new cases within a 24-hour period, pushing the total number of confirmed infections to 782. The sharp increase represents one of the largest daily jumps recorded during the country's ongoing 17th Ebola epidemic and has raised fears that containment efforts are struggling to keep pace with the spread of the deadly virus.

Ebola infections and deaths continue rising rapidly as the outbreak spreads into new health zones across eastern Congo

Outbreak Expands into New Health Zones
According to the latest government situation report, the outbreak continues to affect eastern Congo and has now spread into additional health zones. Confirmed Ebola cases were reported for the first time in the Nia-Nia health zone in Ituri Province and the Mabalako health zone in North Kivu Province.

The epidemic now affects 31 health zones across three provinces. Ituri accounts for 20 affected health zones, North Kivu has 10, while South Kivu has one. Health officials are increasingly concerned that the appearance of cases in new areas could further complicate response and surveillance efforts.

Death Toll Climbs as Facilities Become Overwhelmed
Government data shows that the 782 confirmed cases include 181 deaths, reflecting an increase of 32 fatalities. Currently, 359 patients are either hospitalized or being held in isolation facilities, while 56 patients have recovered from the infection.

The outbreak's case fatality rate stands at 23.1 percent. Contact tracing remains a major challenge, with only 56.5 percent of identified contacts being successfully monitored, significantly below operational targets. Meanwhile, suspected cases are believed to number in the thousands as hospitals, medical centers, and temporary clinics become overwhelmed by growing numbers of sick individuals seeking treatment.

This Medical News report highlights the growing threat posed by the expanding outbreak. Public health experts warn that the continued spread into new health zones, combined with inadequate contact tracing and overstretched healthcare infrastructure, could allow transmission chains to intensify further. Unless surveillance, isolation measures, and medical support are rapidly strengthened, the outbreak risks becoming substantially larger and more difficult to contain in the coming weeks.
