Scientists Discover That Scrolling Through Social Media During Short Breaks May Prevent the Brain From Properly Recovering
Many people spend their work or study breaks scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, believing it helps them relax and recharge. However, a new study suggests that while social media may make people feel refreshed, it may actually keep the brain active instead of allowing it to recover.

Thailand Medical researchers from the School of Allied Health Sciences, the Center of Excellence in Innovation on Essential Oil, the School of Informatics, the School of Medicine, and Walailak University Hospital, all at Walailak University in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, examined how quiet rest compares with browsing social media during breaks. Their findings indicate that although social media can boost alertness, it may interfere with the brain's natural recovery process.
 
Measuring What Really Happens Inside the Brain
The researchers recruited 20 healthy women aged between 20 and 25 years and monitored their brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG), a non-invasive technique that records the brain's electrical signals.
 
Participants completed several types of break sessions. Some simply rested quietly with their eyes closed, while others alternated between keeping their eyes closed and opening them without performing any task. In another session, participants were allowed to browse Facebook or Instagram during their breaks. They could scroll through content but were not allowed to chat or use audio. The researchers then analyzed the EEG recordings using Fast Fourier Transform technology to determine how different types of breaks affected brain activity.
 
Quiet Rest Allowed the Brain to Slow Down
During prolonged quiet rest, the researchers observed that the brain gradually entered a lower-arousal state. Within about four minutes of keeping the eyes closed, slower brainwaves known as delta and theta waves became stronger. These brainwaves are commonly associated with relaxation and reduced alertness.
 
At the same time, alpha and beta brainwaves, which are linked to alertness, attention and active thinking, steadily declined. When participants alternated between eyes-open and eyes-closed rest, this decline occurred more slowly, but by around eight minutes the brain still showed signs of reduced arousal. These changes indicate that the brain was naturally disengaging and beginning its recovery process.
 
Social Media Produced a Very Different Response
Everything changed when participants spent their breaks browsing social media.
Instead of allowing brain activity to settle down, passive social media browsing maintained high levels of cortical arousal throughout the break. By the 16-minute mark, high-frequency beta brainwaves had increased significantly, showing th at the brain remained mentally engaged rather than relaxing.
 
This Medical News report also found that the researchers calculated a beta-to-alpha ratio, an indicator of cortical arousal, which remained consistently higher during social media use than during traditional resting breaks. Rather than drifting toward a more restful state, the brain continued processing information and responding to the constant stream of visual content.
 
Brain Communication Networks Became More Active
The team also examined how different regions of the brain communicated with one another.
 
They discovered that browsing social media strengthened synchronization between brain regions involved in executive control, attention and decision-making. These frontal and central brain areas showed greater functional connectivity during mobile phone use than during quiet rest.
 
According to the researchers, the endless flow of new images and information on social media continually stimulates the brain's attention systems. As a result, although users may feel as if they are taking a relaxing break, objective brain measurements indicate that important brain networks remain highly active instead of disengaging.
 
Useful For Alertness but Not for Recovery
The researchers emphasized that mobile devices are not inherently harmful. Their findings suggest that accessing social media may actually be useful when people feel sleepy, bored or mentally under-stimulated because it increases alertness and helps maintain attention.
 
However, if the purpose of taking a break is to allow the brain to recover from prolonged mental effort, social media appears to work against that goal. The researchers noted that mobile browsing may create the subjective feeling of taking a break while objective EEG measurements show sustained brain activation. They also suggested that repeatedly replacing genuine rest with digital stimulation could contribute to cumulative mental fatigue and possibly interfere with sleep over time, although further long-term studies are needed to confirm these effects.
 
Conclusion
The findings show that accessing social media during breaks does not allow the brain to disengage in the same way as quiet rest. Instead, it keeps brain networks responsible for attention and executive control active, maintaining higher levels of cortical arousal. While this may be beneficial when someone needs to stay awake or regain focus, it appears to come at the cost of genuine neurophysiological recovery, suggesting that screen-free breaks remain the better choice when the goal is to restore mental energy.
