Health Ministry Reports Renewed Rise
Iran’s health authorities reported renewed COVID-19 activity in early September 2026 after the proportion of positive coronavirus tests rose above the country’s lower warning threshold. The increase followed several weeks of rising infections detected through respiratory disease surveillance.
COVID-19 infections are rising across Iran
Reports citing Iran’s Ministry of Health and its Centre for Communicable Disease Management showed coronavirus PCR positivity reaching 8.3 percent, up from 4.9 percent the previous week. The developments highlighted in this
Thailand Medical News report mark a renewed warning from the country’s monitoring system.
Positive Results Climb Above Alert Level
KhabarOnline reported on September 2 that the latest surveillance figures had pushed COVID-19 positivity beyond the ministry’s lower alert threshold of 5 percent.
The findings came from a monitoring programme covering patients seeking outpatient treatment and those receiving hospital care for respiratory illnesses. Of 179 respiratory samples collected through the programme, 8.3 percent tested positive for coronavirus.
The increase amounted to 3.4 percentage points in one week. The percentage reflects results among the sampled patients, rather than the proportion of Iran’s population infected with COVID-19.
Disease Control Chief Confirms Increasing Activity
A September 6 report carried by Ghatreh, citing the Jamaran area health situation, quoted the head of Iran’s Centre for Communicable Disease Management as saying that COVID-19 cases had been increasing for approximately three weeks.
The official pointed to the respiratory surveillance system’s findings and said the rise had been anticipated to some extent following increases reported elsewhere, including South Korea and several European countries.
He said Iran’s respiratory infection monitoring system helped health authorities identify changes in disease activity and track developments in the community.
Influenza Also Shows an Increase
Coronavirus was not the only respiratory virus showing increased activity. The September 2 report said influenza PCR positivity had risen from 3.7 percent to 5.5 percent among samples collected through the same surveillance programme.
The ministry also recorded increases in respiratory illness indicators. Patients with influenza-like symptoms accounted for 6.9 percent of outpatient visits, compared with 6.1 percent previously. Severe respiratory symptoms were recorded in 7.2 percent of hospital patients, up from 6.7 percent.
October Opens with A Respiratory Warning
The reports place Iran’s renewed COVID-19 increase at the beginning of October, with monitored positivity exceeding the official warning level.
