Medical News: Bangladesh is witnessing a sharp rise in COVID-19 infections driven by emerging Omicron subvariants, according to local health authorities and data from the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR). The resurgence has sparked concern among healthcare professionals, especially as testing levels remain relatively low across the country. According to the DGHS, a total of 383 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, with a positivity rate of 7.31%. The overall average positivity rate for the last seven days stands at 13.05% till now, while the fatality rate based on detected cases remains at 1.44 per cent.

Signs of a Possible New Wave
This Medical News report highlights that in May alone, 134 positive cases were recorded out of just 1,409 tests—a monthly infection rate of 9.51%. That figure marks the highest test positivity rate seen so far this year. Health officials say this uptick may signal the beginning of a fresh wave of COVID-19, especially given the highly transmissible nature of the new variants now circulating in the region.

First COVID-19 Death of the Year Sparks Alarm
On June 5, Bangladesh confirmed its first COVID-19 fatality of 2025. While the country had seen relatively few deaths in recent months, the sudden reappearance of fatalities has triggered growing concern among public health experts. With more than 2 million total confirmed cases and over 29,500 deaths reported since the pandemic began, the new developments are a stark reminder that COVID-19 remains a present and evolving threat.

Testing and Surveillance Efforts Under Strain
Health professionals warn that the true number of infections may be significantly underreported due to limited testing and reduced public attention to symptoms. The IEDCR and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) are urging the public to resume caution, wear masks in crowded places, and report symptoms early to health facilities.

Authorities Call for Public Vigilance
Officials stress that community awareness and personal responsibility will be crucial in limiting the spread of the virus during this renewed period of transmission. With rising case numbers and a potentially underestimated infection rate, Bangladesh could face renewed public health pressures if proactive steps are not taken swiftly.
