SAR-CoV-2 Virus Found Lingering In The Middle Ear For A Long Time After Infection! Chinese Researchers Warn Of Viral Persistence In The Ears!
COVID-19 News - Lingering SARS-CoV-2 - Middle Ear  Jun 22, 2023  10 months, 5 days, 2 hours, 52 minutes ago
SARS-CoV-2 Viral Persistence Is A Major Issue That Has Yet To Be Properly Addressed By The Medical Community!

COVID-19 News: In a startling discovery, researchers at the Department of Otolaryngology, The Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University-China, have uncovered a previously unknown connection between the SAR-CoV-2 virus and secretory otitis media, commonly known as "glue ear." Their findings shed light on a perplexing phenomenon observed during the Omicron variant pandemic, where an increasing number of patients presented with secretory otitis media in outpatient clinics. This breakthrough highlights the significance of exploring lesser-known manifestations of COVID-19 and their potential long-term effects on patients' health.

To investigate the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection and secretory otitis media, the study team conducted an extensive case series study. They enrolled 30 patients diagnosed with secretory otitis media associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and performed tympanocentesis - a procedure that involves extracting middle ear effusion (MEE) for analysis. The team employed reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing on both the MEE and nasopharyngeal secretions to detect the presence of the virus.

Surprising Results
Out of the 30 patients, MEE samples from five individuals tested positive for the SAR-CoV-2 virus, indicating its presence in the middle ear. Astonishingly, one patient displayed positive results for both nasopharyngeal secretions and MEE.

These groundbreaking findings challenge the prevailing notion that the virus is exclusively confined to the respiratory system during active infection.

The Lingering Virus
The most significant revelation from this study is that SARS-CoV-2 RNA can persist in MEE even when nasopharyngeal secretions test negative for the virus. This suggests that the middle ear can serve as a reservoir for the virus, allowing it to remain for an extended period even after initial infection. These findings raise questions about the potential for recurrent or chronic ear-related symptoms in individuals previously infected with SAR-CoV-2.

Validation From Previous Studies
A number of past studies and COVID-19 News including autopsies had revealed the presence of infectious SARS-CoV-2 virus in the middle ear of deceased COVID-19 patients.

Implications for Future Research
The discovery of SAR-CoV-2 in the middle ear opens up a new avenue of research in understanding the long-term effects of COVID-19. Exploring the mechanisms through which the virus reaches and persists in the middle ear could lead t o improved diagnostic and treatment strategies for secretory otitis media.

Moreover, this study underscores the importance of investigating lesser-known manifestations of the virus and the need for a comprehensive understanding of its impact on various organ systems.

Conclusion
The study conducted by Chinese researchers illuminates a previously unrecognized relationship between the SAR-CoV-2 virus and secretory otitis media. By detecting the presence of the virus in middle ear effusion, the study highlights the potential for prolonged viral persistence in the middle ear, even when the respiratory tract tests negative for the virus. These findings emphasize the need for continued research into the long-term consequences of COVID-19 and its impact on diverse bodily systems. With further investigation, healthcare professionals can develop more effective strategies to manage and treat this previously overlooked manifestation of the virus, ensuring better outcomes for patients.

The study findings were published as a case series in the peer reviewed journal: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology.
