COVID-19 Infection During Pregnancy Increases Risk Of Adverse Maternal, Fetal, And Newborn Outcomes And Increases Risk Of Death!
Thailand Medical - COVID-19 - Pregnancy - Deadly  Jul 07, 2023  2 years, 7 months, 2 weeks, 2 days, 21 hours, 11 minutes ago
This is our 5th Installment of a series of 25 articles as to why couples should avoid conceiving while the COVID-19 pandemic still ongoing.

Thailand Medical: An international study lead by the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, Washington-USA that involved over 51 leading research, educational and medical institutions across 19 countries have found that COVID-19 during pregnancy increases the risk of adverse maternal, fetal, and newborn outcomes and increases risk of death!

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, one pressing concern has been the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on pregnant individuals. Pregnancy entails various physiological and immunological changes, making it crucial to understand the potential risks associated with COVID-19 during this period. A comprehensive analysis, called a sequential, prospective meta-analysis, was conducted to examine the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 infection and adverse outcomes among pregnant women.

The study screened 137 research articles and included 12 studies from 12 different countries, involving a total of 13,136 pregnant women.

Alarmingly, the study findings revealed that pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 infection faced significantly increased risks across multiple areas. Compared to uninfected pregnant women, those with COVID-19 had a higher likelihood of maternal mortality, admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), requiring mechanical ventilation, receiving critical care, and being diagnosed with pneumonia and thromboembolic disease.

Corresponding author Dr Emily R Smith from George Washington University told Thailand Medical News, “The study indicated that SARS-CoV-2 infection at any time during pregnancy increases the risk of maternal death, severe maternal morbidities and neonatal morbidity!”

Furthermore, infants born to women with SARS-CoV-2 infection also faced heightened risks. They were more likely to be admitted to neonatal care units after birth, born preterm or moderately preterm, and have a low birth weight.

These findings corroborate the results of previous studies, indicating that SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy poses significant risks to both the mother and the baby. The meta-analysis confirmed that pregnant individuals with COVID-19 are more susceptible to severe complications, including maternal death and adverse health outcomes for their offspring. The risks extended to critical care indicators, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, preterm labor, and thromboembolic disease.

The findings also highlight the importance of proactive monitoring and care for pregnant individuals with COVID-19. Prompt, precautionary monitoring of hypertensive women with SARS-CoV-2 infection is particularly crucial. However, further research is needed to determine the causal relationship between COVID-19 and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

Regarding neonatal outcomes, the analysis did not find an association between SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and intrauterine growth restriction or stillbirth at or beyond 28 weeks' gestation. However, inconsistencies in previous studies may arise due to variations in analytical methods and definitions of stillbirth. Additionally, the emergence of new variants, may necessitate further investigation into the potential risks associated with COVID-19 during pregnancy.

In conclusion, this comprehensive meta-analysis provides compelling evidence that SARS-CoV-2 infection at any point during pregnancy significantly increases the risk of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes.

The study findings were published in the peer reviewed journal: BMJ Global Health.

In another “Clinical Informing” article published in the New England Journal of Medicine with reference to a study published in the Lancet with regards to pregnancy outcomes and COVID-19 vaccines, it was warned that despite vaccination, COVID-19 during pregnancy continues to be deadly for mothers and the unborn also.
