Medical News: Scientists Uncover Fat-Based Therapy to Restore Aging Vision
Researchers from the University of California Irvine, working with the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Health and Medical University in Potsdam, Germany, have discovered a possible way to reverse age-related vision decline by targeting how the eyes process specific fats. Their work builds on years of research surrounding the ELOVL2 “aging gene,” which controls the body’s production of vital fatty acids essential for eye health.

Simple Fat Injection May Reverse Aging Eyes

The study found that injecting certain fatty acids directly into the eyes of older mice not only improved their vision but also reversed key molecular signs of aging. This Medical News report highlights that the breakthrough could pave the way for new, noninvasive treatments to restore eyesight and prevent common age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and loss of contrast sensitivity.

How Fat Metabolism Impacts Aging Eyes
As people grow older, the natural decline of the enzyme ELOVL2 disrupts the production of very-long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (VLC-PUFAs), critical for maintaining the retina’s structure and function. When this enzyme weakens, the retina loses these protective molecules, leading to reduced contrast sensitivity and slower adaptation to light—hallmarks of aging eyes.

To address this, the UC Irvine team led by Associate Professor Dorota Skowronska-Krawczyk tested whether supplementing these fats could counteract the loss. The researchers injected an ELOVL2-derived fatty acid, called 24:5n-3, into the eyes of elderly mice. The results were dramatic. The animals regained sharper vision, faster light adaptation, and molecular patterns that resembled those of much younger retinas.

Proving Fat Injection Works Better Than DHA
Earlier attempts to use DHA, another omega-3 fatty acid, had shown little benefit in reversing eye aging. However, the new compound worked differently. It rejuvenated the lipid composition of the retina and triggered genetic activity linked to youthfulness. “Our work proves that DHA alone cannot restore visual function, but this specific fatty acid does,” explained Dr. Skowronska-Krawczyk.

The researchers also found that certain human genetic variants in the ELOVL2 enzyme are linked to faster progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This discovery could allow early genetic screening for those at higher risk of vision loss, leading to preventive care or targeted therapies.

Potential for Wider Anti-Aging Benefits
The study further suggests that the same fatty acid processes might influence how the immune system ages. Collaborations with UC San Diego showed that losing ELOVL2 activity accelerates immune cell aging, hinting that fat-based treatments could strengthen immunity and even reduce risks of age-related blood cancers.

Conclusion
While t he therapy has so far only been tested in animals, researchers are optimistic that similar lipid supplementation could one day be developed for humans. The findings not only shed light on how aging affects vision but also reveal a broader biological mechanism linking fat metabolism to longevity. If further research confirms these results, millions suffering from macular degeneration and age-related vision decline could regain clearer sight and improved quality of life.

The study findings were published in the peer reviewed journal: Science Translational Medicine.
