COVID-19 infections are increasing across Italy as autumn brings renewed concerns about respiratory infections, with the latest official surveillance figures showing rising case numbers, higher test positivity, and an increase in reported deaths. Although the situation remains considerably less severe than during the pandemic's earlier years, the latest developments highlight the continuing circulation of SARS-CoV-2.
Italy records rising COVID-19 cases, increasing test positivity, and additional deaths as autumn respiratory infections emerge
According to Italy's Ministry of Health and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, the country recorded 262 new COVID-19 cases between October 1 and October 7, 2026, compared with 245 cases during the preceding week, representing an increase of approximately 6.9%.
Latest Surveillance Data Reveals Rising Positivity and Deaths
The official weekly surveillance report also recorded four COVID-19-related deaths, compared with one death during September 24–30.
Testing increased slightly, from 11,129 to 11,233 tests, while the national positivity rate climbed from 2.2% to 2.3%.
These figures suggest a modest increase in detected infections, although limited testing means reported cases cannot accurately represent the country's total infection burden.
Regional Differences Reveal Uneven Transmission
Lombardy recorded the highest number of new infections, with 120 cases, slightly below the previous week's 123.
Campania experienced a particularly noticeable increase, reporting 33 cases compared with 13 previously. Lazio recorded 21 cases, up from 12, while Piemonte registered 12 infections compared with four.
However, several regions experienced declining numbers. Veneto reported eight cases compared with 19, while Emilia-Romagna recorded 31 compared with 36.
Friuli Venezia Giulia reported two deaths, while Lombardia and Puglia recorded one each.
Omicron Descendants Remain a Concern
Several Omicron descendants, including Stratus (XFG), Nimbus (NB.1.8.1), and XEC, have attracted attention because of their transmissibility and immune-evasion characteristics.
However, the latest Italian surveillance bulletin does not provide variant-specific sequencing results, making it impossible to establish which lineage is responsible for the reported weekly increase.
Symptoms associated with circulating Omicron descendants generally include sore throat, nasal congestion, coughing, fatigue, and fever. Some infections can also produce more serious respiratory complications.
Elderly Individuals Remain Particularly Vulnerable
Health professionals remain concerned about older adults, particularly those over 80, alongside immunocompromised individuals and people with underlying medical conditions.
Waning immunity and delayed booster vaccinations can increase vulnerability to severe outcomes, even when infections remain relatively mild among younger, healthier populations.

Thailand Medical News report emphasizes that the latest figures demonstrate increasing detected infections but do not establish a corresponding nationwide increase in hospitalizations.
Continued Surveillance Remains Essential
Italy's latest figures indicate a modest but measurable increase in COVID-19 activity rather than an immediate nationwide healthcare emergency. Nevertheless, rising positivity, regional differences, and additional reported deaths reinforce the importance of continued surveillance.
Protecting vulnerable populations through timely testing, and early clinical assessment remains essential as respiratory virus circulation intensifies during autumn.
