Medical News: A new study is shedding light on a simple yet powerful combination that could help older women better manage type 2 diabetes: strength training paired with vitamin D supplements. Researchers from Kyung Hee University’s Graduate School of Physical Education and the Department of Taekwondo, College of Physical Education, Kyung Hee University, Republic of Korea, have found that using both approaches together delivers far stronger health benefits than either one alone.

A Growing Health Concern Among Elderly Women
Type 2 diabetes is a major health issue among older adults, especially women. Many also suffer from low vitamin D levels, which can worsen blood sugar control and increase the risk of falls and heart disease. While doctors often recommend exercise or supplements separately, this new research explored what happens when both are combined.
How the Study Was Conducted
The researchers followed 52 elderly women aged between 65 and 80, all diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and vitamin D deficiency. Over 12 weeks, participants were divided into four groups: one did resistance exercise and took vitamin D, one exercised without supplements, one took vitamin D only, and one did neither.
The exercise involved supervised strength training three times a week, while the supplement group received a daily dose of vitamin D.
Remarkable Improvements Seen
The results were striking. Women who combined exercise with vitamin D experienced the most meaningful health improvements.
Their blood sugar levels dropped significantly, including fasting glucose and HbA1c, a key marker used to measure long-term diabetes control. Insulin levels and insulin resistance also improved, indicating the body was using sugar more effectively.
In addition, cholesterol levels improved. Harmful fats such as LDL cholesterol and triglycerides decreased, while beneficial HDL cholesterol increased. These changes are important because people with diabetes face a higher risk of heart disease.

Medical News report highlights that the combined approach also led to a surprising rise in a hormone called calcitonin. This hormone is traditionally linked to bone health, but researchers believe it may also play a role in improving metabolism when triggered by both exercise and vitamin D.

Beyond metabolic health, physical performance improved dramatically. Participants in the combined group showed major gains in muscle strength, including better handgrip and leg strength.
Balance also improved, which is critical for older adults. Tests measuring reach and walking stability showed noticeable progress, suggesting a reduced risk of falls—one of the most serious dangers for elderly indi
viduals with diabetes.
Why the Combination Works Better
Researchers believe the two interventions work through different but complementary mechanisms. Exercise helps muscles absorb sugar more efficiently, while vitamin D supports insulin function and overall metabolic health.
When combined, these effects appear to amplify each other, leading to better outcomes than either method alone.
Conclusions
The findings clearly show that combining resistance exercise with vitamin D supplementation provides a more effective strategy for improving blood sugar control, cholesterol levels, muscle strength, and balance in elderly women with type 2 diabetes. This dual approach targets multiple biological pathways simultaneously, resulting in stronger and more consistent health benefits that could significantly reduce complications and improve quality of life in this vulnerable population.
