Medical News: Growing Infection Rates Raise Concerns
COVID-19 cases are steadily climbing in Latvia, sparking concerns among health officials and the public. The Disease Prevention and Control Centre (SPKC) has confirmed that the infection rate is now much higher than in recent weeks. According to surveillance data, 18.9 percent of tested samples came back positive last week, compared with 17.3 percent in the two weeks before and just 12.3 percent in week 34. This Medical News report highlights how quickly the situation is worsening as the virus continues to spread.

Hospitalizations and Deaths Increasing
The health impact is also being felt in hospitals. Forty-five new patients with confirmed COVID-19 were admitted to medical facilities last week, and a total of 81 people were treated for the virus across Latvia. Among them, 26 patients had COVID-19 listed as their primary diagnosis. Sadly, five more deaths linked to confirmed COVID-19 infections were also reported. Experts note that this pattern mirrors what was seen around the same period last year, suggesting a seasonal surge in cases.

Wastewater Data Confirms Viral Spread
Wastewater surveillance is also painting a troubling picture. Tests show that the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 RNA is on the rise in Latvia’s wastewater systems. The currently dominant strain is Omicron KP.3 and its related offshoots, though other subtypes are gaining ground in certain regions. Such data provides early warning signals of increased virus activity before hospitalizations peak, allowing authorities to track new variants more closely.

Health Authorities Stress Preventive Measures
The SPKC has reminded residents of simple but effective measures to reduce the risk of infection. Anyone with symptoms of a respiratory illness should stay at home and avoid contact with others. Frequent and thorough hand washing or use of hand disinfectants is strongly advised. Rooms should be well-ventilated, and close contact with sick individuals should be avoided. Officials also recommend wearing medical masks or respirators in public spaces, particularly for people in high-risk groups.

Conclusion
The rise in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths shows that the virus remains a serious health threat in Latvia. With wastewater monitoring confirming higher viral loads and new subtypes circulating, the situation could worsen in the coming weeks. Preventive measures, although simple, are critical to slowing transmission and protecting vulnerable groups. Public awareness and community responsibility will play a central role in avoiding another severe outbreak this season.
