More people in Switzerland are coughing and falling ill with respiratory infections, and COVID-19 cases are now beginning to rise as the country heads toward the colder months.
COVID-19 cases are edging higher in Switzerland as doctors report a growing number of patients with respiratory illnesses
The latest figures from the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) show that reported coronavirus infections have been increasing slightly since the end of August. The reporting rate has climbed from around 0.25 cases per 100,000 residents to approximately 0.4 per 100,000.
While those numbers remain low compared with the major waves experienced during the pandemic, the increase comes as doctors are also seeing more patients with coughs and other respiratory symptoms.
More Patients Seek Help for Respiratory Illnesses
The broader rise in respiratory illness is becoming increasingly visible in medical practices.
According to FOPH surveillance figures updated in mid-September, Switzerland recorded an estimated 67.51 doctor consultations for acute respiratory illnesses per 100,000 residents. The trend was moving upward.
Influenza-like illnesses were also increasing, reaching an estimated 16.33 consultations per 100,000 people.
That means COVID-19 is only part of the current picture. Several respiratory viruses can cause similar symptoms, making a cough, fever, sore throat or runny nose insufficient on its own to determine which infection a person has.
COVID-19 Cases Edge Higher
The increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases nevertheless provides another indication that SARS-CoV-2 continues to circulate in Switzerland.
Official figures count laboratory-confirmed infections reported to the FOPH. However, with far fewer people routinely testing for COVID-19 than during the pandemic, confirmed case numbers cannot capture every infection occurring in the population.
Health authorities therefore rely on several forms of surveillance, including laboratory reports, samples collected through the Sentinella medical network and wastewater monitoring.
