China’s H5N6 Death Sparks Fresh Fears Over Deadly Bird Flu Spread

Medical News: Chinese health authorities and the World Health Organization have confirmed another fatal human infection linked to the avian influenza A(H5N6) virus, raising renewed concerns about the continuing threat posed by bird flu strains circulating in poultry markets across Asia.

Fatal H5N6 bird flu case in China revives concerns over the virus high human mortality rate

The latest victim was a 55-year-old woman from Chongqing Municipality in southwestern China. According to reports submitted to the WHO during the first week of May 2026, the woman developed symptoms on April 16 before her condition rapidly deteriorated into severe pneumonia. She was hospitalized on April 23 and later died on May 3.

Poultry Exposure Linked to Infection
Investigators found that the woman had purchased, slaughtered, and consumed poultry before falling ill. Environmental testing later detected influenza A(H5) contamination on a cutting board used during food preparation. Health officials stated that all identified close contacts tested negative and showed no symptoms, suggesting no immediate evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission.

This Medical News report highlights growing fears among infectious disease experts as H5N6 continues to demonstrate an unusually high fatality rate in humans compared to many other avian influenza strains.

Disturbing Mortality Rate Raises Alarm
Since the first documented human H5N6 infection in 2014, the WHO has recorded 93 laboratory-confirmed cases in the Western Pacific Region, including 58 deaths. This places the case fatality rate at a staggering 62.4 percent, making H5N6 one of the deadliest avian influenza viruses known to infect humans.

Doctors warn that symptoms can initially resemble seasonal influenza, including fever, sore throat, cough, and muscle pain. However, many patients rapidly progress to severe respiratory complications such as pneumonia, respiratory failure, and multi-organ damage. Gastrointestinal symptoms and eye infections have also been observed in some cases.

Health authorities continue urging the public to avoid contact with live poultry, maintain strict hand hygiene, thoroughly cook poultry products and eggs, and wear masks when respiratory symptoms appear. The continued emergence of sporadic human infections demonstrates that H5N6 remains deeply entrenched in poultry environments and still possesses significant pandemic potential if viral mutations eventually enhance human transmissibility.
