Thailand Medical News: COVID-19 Silent Assault on Multiple Organs
Researchers from Bukhara State University, Asia International University, and Bukhara State Medical Institute have unveiled alarming evidence that COVID-19 is far more than just a respiratory infection. In one of the largest systematic reviews to date, they examined 147 peer-reviewed studies covering over 2 million patients and found the virus can cause long-lasting damage to almost every major organ in the body.

The findings reveal that 78% of hospitalized patients suffered lung involvement, 43% had neurological complications, 32% had heart damage, and 28% developed kidney problems. Even more concerning, between 10% and 35% of patients showed persistent organ dysfunction six months after infection. This Thailand Medical News report highlights that the virus’s destructive power stems from three key processes: the cytokine storm, endothelial dysfunction, and microvascular blood clots, all of which disrupt normal organ function.

Lungs and Heart Among the Hardest Hit
The lungs remain the most common target, with many patients experiencing “silent hypoxemia” — dangerously low oxygen levels without noticeable breathing difficulty. Some survivors develop pulmonary fibrosis, leaving them with permanent breathing issues. The heart is also vulnerable, with myocarditis, heart rhythm disturbances, and heart failure observed even in people with no previous heart problems. Blood clot risks are significantly increased, fueling strokes, pulmonary embolisms, and other life-threatening events.

Neurological, Kidney, and Liver Damage
The brain and nervous system are often affected, with patients reporting brain fog, memory problems, strokes, loss of smell or taste, and even Guillain–Barré syndrome. Kidneys show signs of injury in many hospitalized patients, sometimes progressing to chronic kidney disease. The liver is not spared either, with enzyme spikes, inflammation, and in some cases, long-term damage that may accelerate existing liver conditions.

Gut and Immune System Disruption
The gastrointestinal tract can be an early target, with diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain sometimes appearing before respiratory symptoms. COVID-19 can also disrupt the gut microbiome, leading to long-term digestive and immune problems. The immune system itself often swings between dangerous overreaction — the so-called cytokine storm — and prolonged suppression, making recovery slow and leaving patients vulnerable to other infections.

Conclusions Point to a Need for Lifelong Monitoring
The researchers conclude that COVID-19 is not merely an acute illness but a complex, long-term, multi-organ disease. They urge a complete shift from treating it as an isolated lung infection to recognizing it as a systemic condition requiring multidisciplinary care. Ongoing moni toring, rehabilitation, and new therapies are essential to manage lingering damage. They warn that even people who had mild infections may face hidden health consequences months or years later, making early detection and integrated care critical in preventing permanent disability.

The study findings were published on a preprint server and are currently being peer reviewed.
