Medical News: COVID Rates in Morocco and Africa Are Surging Fast
As of mid-May 2025, Morocco is grappling with a severe COVID-19 wave that has pushed its test positivity rate to a shocking 21 percent, according to the World Health Organization’s latest dashboard.

Doctors across the country are describing scenes of overcrowded hospitals and a mounting health crisis. Despite the worsening situation, Moroccan authorities are reportedly censoring media coverage and restricting public communication on the extent of the outbreak.

This Medical News report highlights that the surge is not isolated to Morocco. COVID-19 infection rates are rising at a concerning pace in several other African nations, including Burkina Faso, Senegal, Niger, Ghana, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, and Mozambique. Medical professionals and local observers in these countries are calling the current wave catastrophic, with some saying infection levels are now worse than during the initial global pandemic waves of 2020 and 2021.

Africa was largely insulated from the disastrous effects of COVID-19 in the initial surges despite majority of the population there being unvaccinated.

Burkina Faso is reporting a test positivity rate of 9.7 percent, while Cameroon follows closely with 8.6 percent. Other nations are seeing a similar upward trend in daily case numbers and hospital admissions. However, gathering accurate data on the real extent of the outbreaks remains a serious challenge. Many African governments are concealing or underreporting figures, and media in numerous countries face strict censorship and repression when attempting to publish pandemic-related news.

Public health experts warn that these hidden outbreaks could fuel further spread across borders and leave already struggling healthcare systems in a state of collapse. The lack of transparency and access to timely data also means that vulnerable populations in remote or impoverished regions are left without the support they need. In many rural areas, people are still unable to access testing or treatment.

To make matters worse, there is no or little genomic surveillance in many African countries and it is hard to comment as to what SARS-CoV-2 variants are behind the COVID-19 surge across Africa.

The current wave across Africa is a stark reminder that COVID-19 remains a persistent and evolving thre at globally. Without international attention, support, and transparent public health efforts, many African nations risk facing another deadly health disaster.
