Six Airport Workers Infected in Rare Cluster
German health authorities are investigating an exceptionally rare malaria outbreak linked to Frankfurt Airport after six male workers contracted malaria tropica and two died, raising concerns that infected mosquitoes may have been inadvertently transported into Germany aboard international aircraft.

The cases involved employees working in different occupations and areas of Germany’s busiest airport. The first fatal patient reportedly became ill in early July, while the second developed symptoms in mid-August. Four other infected workers required hospital treatment but have since recovered and are considered out of danger.
Authorities believe the infections were probably caused by imported malaria-carrying mosquitoes rather than transmission occurring between people.
Imported Mosquito Suspected
The Robert Koch Institute believes an infected Anopheles stephensi mosquito transported aboard an aircraft could be responsible. This species is an important malaria vector capable of transmitting Plasmodium parasites responsible for potentially severe disease.
Malaria tropica, generally associated with Plasmodium falciparum infection, is the most dangerous major form of malaria because patients can deteriorate rapidly without appropriate treatment.
Frankfurt health officials have emphasized that malaria does not normally spread directly from one infected person to another. Instead, transmission occurs when an infected Anopheles mosquito bites a person and transfers malaria parasites.

Mosquito Traps Deployed Across Frankfurt Airport
Airport operator Fraport has installed mosquito traps in and around Frankfurt Airport. Captured mosquitoes are being examined at a tropical medicine laboratory in Antwerp, Belgium, with investigators attempting to identify their species and possible geographic origin.
Officials are also analyzing patient blood samples to determine whether the six infections could be epidemiologically linked to one mosquito or potentially several infected mosquitoes.
Laboratory investigations may take several weeks.
Airport employees have been informed about the outbreak and advised to seek medical attention if they develop suspicious symptoms. Physicians have similarly been urged to consider malaria when airport workers present with unexplained fever.
Delayed Diagnosis Could Prove Deadly
The absence of international travel history creates a major diagnostic challenge. Doctors in Germany typically ass
ociate malaria with travelers returning from endemic regions. Locally acquired airport malaria could therefore initially be overlooked, delaying potentially lifesaving antimalarial treatment.
European research examining airport and baggage-associated malaria between 1969 and 2024 identified 145 cases, including nine in Germany. Frankfurt Airport also recorded an airport malaria infection in 2023, although that patient was successfully treated.
Wider Risk Remains Very Low
Health officials stress that the risk to Frankfurt residents remains extremely low. However, higher temperatures may allow imported mosquitoes to survive longer after arriving in Germany, potentially extending the period during which an infected insect could transmit malaria.
Authorities are therefore reviewing mosquito surveillance, aircraft disinfection procedures, vector-control measures, and efforts to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites.
The Frankfurt outbreak demonstrates how international aviation can occasionally transport infectious disease vectors thousands of miles beyond their normal geographic range. Although the danger to Germany’s wider population is currently considered extremely small, two deaths among six identified cases highlight the potentially devastating consequences of delayed malaria diagnosis.
Rapid recognition of symptoms, continued mosquito surveillance, effective aircraft vector control, and detailed laboratory investigations will now be critical to determining exactly how the outbreak occurred and preventing further infections.
