In this
Medical News report, data from the official “Informe Diario Sarampión” released on March 6, 2026, indicate that a total of 31,728 suspected measles cases have been recorded nationwide. Of these, 12,237 cases have been laboratory confirmed as measles infections since the outbreak in early of 2025.
Nationwide Spread of Measles Across Mexico
The surveillance report indicates that the outbreak has spread widely across Mexico, affecting all 32 states and more than 400 municipalities.
Authorities confirmed that a total of 33 deaths linked to measles have been recorded since January 2025. Alarmingly, six of those fatalities have already occurred in the first months of 2026, indicating that transmission remains active and severe.
Chihuahua has reported the highest number of measles-related deaths with 21 fatalities. Other states that have recorded deaths include Jalisco, Durango, Sonora, Michoacán, Tlaxcala, Mexico City, Chiapas and Guerrero.
Children And Infants Among the Most Affected
Epidemiological data show that young children represent a large proportion of infections.
Children aged one to four years account for 1,658 cases while children aged five to nine years represent 1,444 confirmed infections.
However, adults are also affected. The 25-to-29-year age group alone accounts for 1,411 reported cases.
Infants under one year of age appear to be the most vulnerable population group when measured by incidence rate, with approximately 61.9 cases per 100,000 population.
Cases Rising Rapidly in 2026
Health authorities warn that the outbreak is progressing rapidly when compared to the previous year.
Mexico recorded 6,452 confirmed measles cases during the entire year of 2025. However, by early March 2026, authorities had already documented 5,785 cases for the year, suggesting that the current outbreak trajectory could soon surpass last year’s total.
There was a total of 7 deaths due to measles in 2026 so far.
Vaccination Campaigns Intensified
In response to the growing outbreak, Mexican health authorities have intensified nationwide vaccination efforts. These include expanded immunization campaigns, deployment of mobile vaccination brigades and prioritization of vaccinations for unvaccinated children and adults.
