Medical News: The United Arab Emirates has been placed on heightened alert after the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that an Ebola-infected individual from the Democratic Republic of Congo travelled to the Gulf nation before continuing on a journey that also included Uganda. The revelation has triggered extensive contact tracing efforts and renewed concerns about the international spread of one of the world's deadliest viral diseases.
UAE health authorities intensify monitoring after WHO confirms Ebola-infected traveler from Congo visited the country
WHO Confirms Cross-Border Ebola Travel
According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the infected traveler is among the growing number of confirmed Ebola cases linked to the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The announcement was made during a briefing on June 3, where WHO officials disclosed that the individual had travelled to both the UAE and Uganda while infected.
The WHO is now working closely with health authorities in Uganda and the UAE to collect additional information, assess potential exposure risks during travel, and coordinate contact tracing operations. The development has raised concerns because Ebola can spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, making rapid identification of exposed individuals critical for containing outbreaks.
UAE Authorities Activate Emergency Public Health Measures
In response to the WHO announcement, the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention emphasized that no Ebola cases have been detected within the country. State-run news agency WAM reported that the infected traveler did not seek medical treatment or visit any healthcare facility during the stay in the UAE.
Health officials stated that precautionary protocols had already been activated, including comprehensive risk assessments, contact tracing, and enhanced surveillance measures. WHO officials revealed that 16 individuals in the UAE who may have come into contact with the infected traveler have been isolated and placed under monitoring. In Uganda, an additional 58 potentially exposed individuals are also being monitored as part of containment efforts.
Outbreak Continues to Escalate in Congo
The current outbreak has expanded significantly beyond the mining town where health experts believe the epidemic first emerged. WHO officials disclosed that only about 45 percent of identified Ebola cases are currently being followed up through contact tracing, far below the ideal target of more than 90 percent needed to effectively interrupt transmission chains.
So far, Congo has recorded 344 confirmed Ebola cases and 60 deaths. Uganda has reported 15 confirmed infections and one death linked to the outbreak. The situation has become increasingly difficult to manage as infected individuals move across borders and travel through multiple regions.
Rare Bundibugyo Virus Complicates Response Efforts
The outbreak is being driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a variant that has caused only a limited number of out
breaks historically. Public health experts describe the current epidemic as one of the most challenging Ebola emergencies in recent years due to its spread across conflict-affected regions where insecurity, population displacement, and mistrust of authorities hinder disease surveillance efforts.

Medical News report highlights how rapidly evolving surveillance data and extensive population movement continue to complicate containment strategies. Health authorities remain concerned that incomplete contact tracing could allow additional chains of transmission to emerge, increasing the risk of further international spread. While no Ebola cases have been detected in the UAE, the incident demonstrates the vulnerability of global travel networks to infectious disease threats and underscores the importance of swift detection, monitoring, and cross-border cooperation to prevent a wider public health emergency.
