Medical News: A public health crisis is rapidly unfolding in Kyrgyzstan as the nation faces a massive surge in acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI) and influenza. In just one week, over 36,000 cases were officially reported between November 24 and November 30, more than doubling the previous week's numbers and triggering emergency responses across multiple regions.

Children Hit the Hardest as Schools and Kindergartens Shut Down
Health authorities revealed that more than 70 percent of all reported cases involve children under 14 years old. In response, at least 65 kindergartens have been closed—25 in Bishkek alone and around 40 more in the Chui region. Meanwhile, in Osh, five schools have fully switched to online learning, with others partially adopting remote classes. Batken has followed suit, introducing limited online instruction as well.
The Ministry of Health has issued urgent guidelines and activated the Center for State Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance to enforce region-specific containment measures. This includes quarantine protocols in affected educational institutions and real-time epidemiological monitoring in urban centers like Bishkek.
Strains Identified and Prevention Ramped Up
The outbreak is being driven by multiple respiratory viruses including influenza strains A/H3N2 (commonly called Hong Kong flu), influenza B, and ongoing COVID-19 cases. Other ARVI culprits include rhinoviruses, adenoviruses, and parainfluenza viruses.

Medical News report highlights, the Ministry of Health is aggressively disseminating preventive measures. These include mask mandates in healthcare settings, disinfection routines in public buildings, and restrictions on hospital visits. Sanitary notifications have also been dispatched to schools, malls, religious bodies, and cultural venues. The task force has warned that stricter restrictions may be imposed if case numbers continue to soar.
Residents are being advised to avoid crowds, minimize use of public transport, wear masks, use sanitizers, and seek early care through Family Medicine Centers rather than hospitals. Doctors urge parents to keep symptomatic children at home to prevent further spread.
The rapid escalation in flu and ARVI cases has placed immense pressure on Kyrgyzstan’s healthcare and education systems, and health officials warn that further drastic measures could follow if the outbreak intensifies. Infections are expected to rise as winter progresses, especially among vulnerable child populations.
