Three previously healthy children develop serious complications
Hong Kong health authorities are raising concerns over severe influenza infections among children after three additional pediatric cases involving potentially life-threatening complications were recorded.
The Centre for Health Protection CHP said all three children had previously been in good health, highlighting how influenza can occasionally deteriorate rapidly even in youngsters without known underlying medical conditions.
The first case involves a six-year-old girl who developed fever, runny nose and cough on September 3. After attending Ruttonjee Hospital, she suffered a generalized convulsion and was transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. Testing confirmed influenza A, complicated by encephalopathy. She remains in critical condition.
A three-year-old girl developed fever on September 2 and initially attended a private hospital without requiring admission. The following day, she suffered a generalized convulsion and was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Laboratory testing detected influenza A, while doctors diagnosed septic shock. She remains in serious condition.
The third patient, a 15-year-old boy, developed fever, runny nose and malaise on September 3. Persistent symptoms subsequently led to hospitalization, followed by intensive care after his blood pressure fell. Testing confirmed influenza B complicated by septic shock. He was transferred to Queen Mary Hospital and remains in serious condition.
Severe cases accumulate as influenza remains widespread
Preliminary investigations found that none of the children had travelled during their incubation periods, while household contacts remained asymptomatic. However, two classmates of the six-year-old developed mild influenza symptoms that did not require hospitalization, prompting infection-control measures at her school.
Hong Kong entered its influenza season in late June, and surveillance indicates activity remains high. Since then, 16 severe pediatric influenza cases have been recorded. Eight patients have recovered and been discharged, two are stable, three are serious, two are critical and one has died.
CHP Controller Dr Edwin Tsui said the overall number of severe pediatric cases remains comparable with previous influenza seasons, but widespread community transmission and rising infections have consequently increased the absolute number of serious cases. Authorities expect influenza activity to remain elevated during the beginning of the new school year, potentially triggering outbreaks in schools.
Vaccination campaign begins September 17

Thailand Medical News report, authorities are urging families to obtain seasonal influenza vaccination promptly when Hong Kong's 2026 27 vaccination programmes begin on September 17.
The school outreach programme will introduce electronic consent through eHealth, while approximately 80 schools have already scheduled September vaccination activities, reportedly 16 times the number during the corresponding period last year.
Parents are also being warned to seek emergency medical attention if children develop breathing difficulties, wheezing, blue lips, chest pain, confusion, persist
ent fever or convulsions.
Vigilance increasingly important
The latest cases demonstrate that pediatric influenza can progress from familiar respiratory symptoms to neurological complications, septic shock and intensive-care admission within a remarkably short period. With influenza transmission remaining high as students return to classrooms, vaccination, early recognition of deterioration, hand hygiene, environmental cleaning and appropriate infection-control practices will be particularly important for limiting severe disease and protecting vulnerable families.
