Travel Advisory Raised as Chikungunya Cases Rises to Over 2,816 in Mauritius

Medical News: Mauritius is facing a rapidly worsening Chikungunya outbreak that has now triggered an elevated travel advisory from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC officially upgraded Mauritius to a Level 2 travel alert, urging visitors to practice enhanced precautions as locally transmitted infections continue climbing across the island nation.

Mauritius battles explosive Chikungunya surge as global health agencies raise travel warnings and intensify mosquito
control efforts

Cases Surge at Alarming Speed
Health authorities confirmed that between January and May 11, 2026, Mauritius recorded 2,816 locally acquired Chikungunya infections, with around 102 individuals still considered actively infectious. The dramatic rise has alarmed both local and international health agencies because the outbreak expanded at an explosive pace within only a few weeks.

At the end of March, the country had documented just 735 cases. The latest figures reveal that infections nearly quadrupled in a short period, highlighting how aggressively the mosquito-borne virus is spreading during the current rainy season. Experts believe persistent rainfall and unusually high mosquito densities have created ideal breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitoes, the primary carriers of Chikungunya.

The hardest-hit regions include the urban districts of Rose-Hill, particularly Stanley, Roches-Brunes, and Plaisance. Northern areas such as Baie-du-Tombeau and Péreybère are also reporting large clusters, while southern communities near Pointe-d'Esny remain under close surveillance.

Government Launches Aggressive Countermeasures
Mauritian authorities have activated a nationwide “One Health” strategy involving public health officials, environmental agencies, and vector control teams. More than 105,000 premises have already undergone larvicide treatment and intensive fogging operations aimed at destroying mosquito breeding sites.

One of the most innovative interventions involves the planned weekly release of 100,000 sterile mosquitoes designed to reduce the local Aedes mosquito population naturally over time. Authorities also launched a dedicated public hotline, 8924, to coordinate fever surveillance and respond to growing public concerns.

This Medical News report highlights that Chikungunya infections can cause debilitating fever, severe joint pain, swelling, muscle aches, fatigue, and widespread skin rashes that may persist for months in some patients.

Travelers Urged to Take Strict Precautions
The CDC is advising eligible travelers to consider Chikungunya vaccination before visiting Mauritius. Travelers are also encouraged to use EPA-approved insect repellents, wear protective clothing, and stay only in accommodations with screened windows or functioning air conditioning.

Pregnant individuals, especially those nearing delivery, are bei ng strongly cautioned because the virus can be transmitted to newborns and potentially lead to severe long-term complications.

The worsening outbreak demonstrates how rapidly mosquito-borne diseases can overwhelm tropical regions when environmental conditions favor transmission, underscoring the urgent importance of sustained mosquito control, vaccination awareness, and vigilant public health monitoring.
