Medical News: New study suggests natural mango leaf compound may sharpen the mind within 30 minutes
A new clinical study has found that a specially formulated mango leaf extract could improve attention, mental speed, cognitive flexibility, and mood in healthy young adults in as little as 30 minutes after taking a single dose. The findings add to growing evidence that natural plant-based compounds may offer an alternative approach for supporting mental performance without relying on traditional stimulants such as caffeine.
A new clinical trial found that a soluble mango leaf extract rapidly improved attention, mental speed, and mood in healthy
young adults for up to five hours
The research was conducted by scientists from Nektium Pharma S.L. (Spain), the University of Jaén, the University of Malaga, and the University of Atlántico Medio.
A carefully designed clinical trial
The researchers enrolled 88 healthy university students between 18 and 25 years of age in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial. Each participant received either a single 100 mg dose of the soluble mango leaf extract Zynamite® S or a placebo before later switching to the opposite treatment after a one-week washout period.
The extract is standardized to contain 60% mangiferin, a phytochemical that has attracted scientific interest because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential brain-supporting properties. Unlike conventional mango leaf extracts, this soluble version was developed to improve the body's absorption of mangiferin, allowing effective blood levels to be reached using a relatively small dose.
Faster thinking and better attention
Participants completed several well-established mental performance tests before taking the supplement and again 30 minutes, three hours, and five hours later.
The results showed that those taking the mango leaf extract completed tasks measuring mental processing speed and visual attention significantly faster than those receiving the placebo. Improvements appeared within just 30 minutes and became even stronger after three and five hours.
The study also found better performance in tests measuring executive function, which refers to the brain's ability to plan, switch between tasks, solve problems, and ignore distractions. While these benefits became more obvious after three hours, they remained evident throughout the five-hour testing period.
Another important finding involved processing speed. Volunteers consistently completed more correct responses in a symbol substitution test after taking the extract, with the improvement becoming progressively greater over time. The researchers noted that these gains were moderate in size and comparable with improvements reported for some established cognitive enhancers, although no stimulant was directly compared in this trial.
Mood also improved during demanding mental tasks
Beyond cognitive performance, participants reported feeling emotionally better while performing mental
ly challenging activities.

Medical News report highlights that volunteers experienced lower levels of tension, fatigue, depressed mood, and overall mood disturbance after taking the mango leaf extract compared with placebo.
The improvements were not limited to a single emotional measure. Feelings of tension were reduced within 30 minutes, while fatigue remained consistently lower throughout the five-hour observation period. Overall mood also improved rapidly and stayed better across all testing sessions.
Interestingly, the extract appeared to support alertness without producing the sudden burst of stimulation often associated with caffeine. Researchers suggested the findings indicate a steadier improvement in mental energy rather than an intense short-lived boost followed by a crash.
Why might it work?
Although this study did not directly examine how the extract works inside the brain, the researchers discussed several possible explanations based on previous laboratory research.
Mangiferin may help maintain healthy dopamine activity by slowing the breakdown of this important brain chemical in areas responsible for attention and decision-making. Earlier studies have also suggested that mangiferin may influence brain cell communication, support learning-related nerve connections, and enhance signaling pathways involved in memory and concentration.
The improved soluble formulation also increases mangiferin absorption more than threefold compared with conventional mango leaf extracts, which may explain why measurable benefits appeared so quickly after supplementation.
Conclusion
While the study involved only healthy young adults and examined the effects of a single dose, the findings provide encouraging evidence that a highly bioavailable mango leaf extract can rapidly improve several aspects of cognitive performance while also supporting emotional well-being during mentally demanding activities. Larger independent studies involving different age groups, longer supplementation periods, and real-world work or academic settings will be needed to confirm whether these promising short-term benefits translate into meaningful long-term improvements in everyday life.
