75 Medics Infected with Ebola and 17 Have Died in Outbreak In DRC

Medical News: The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is continuing to escalate, with healthcare workers paying a devastating price as the deadly virus spreads rapidly through affected communities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), at least 75 healthcare workers have contracted Ebola since the outbreak was officially declared on May 15, and 17 of them have already died.

Healthcare workers face mounting risks as a fast-moving Ebola outbreak overwhelms parts of eastern Democratic
Republic of the Congo

Healthcare System Under Severe Strain
WHO emergency director Marie Roseline Belizaire described the situation as extremely serious, warning that the outbreak is evolving at an alarming pace. Speaking from the outbreak epicenter in eastern DRC, she emphasized that the loss of doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel is placing enormous pressure on an already fragile healthcare system.

The DRC has one of the lowest healthcare worker-to-population ratios in the world, with only about 11 health workers per 10,000 people. The deaths of trained medical staff are therefore particularly damaging to response efforts. Health officials revealed that the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola may have been circulating for months before authorities officially recognized the outbreak, exposing frontline workers long before protective measures were implemented.

Protective Equipment Shortages Increase Risks
Despite ongoing response efforts, many healthcare facilities continue to face shortages of essential protective equipment such as gloves, masks, and gowns. These shortages have left medical staff vulnerable to infection while treating patients.

Belizaire noted that WHO is also providing psychological support to healthcare workers who are struggling with fear and trauma after witnessing colleagues become infected and die. The emotional burden on frontline responders has become a major concern as the outbreak intensifies.

Death Toll Continues to Rise
Congolese authorities reported that the outbreak has infected 896 people and claimed 232 lives across 31 health zones. Neighboring Uganda has also been affected, reporting 19 cases and two deaths.

African Union member states have pledged nearly $1 billion to support response efforts in both the DRC and Uganda. Additional medical teams from China and Uganda are being deployed to strengthen containment measures and provide critical healthcare support.

Displacement Camps Raise New Fears
The outbreak is generating increasing concern in displacement camps throughout eastern DRC, where overcrowding, poor sanitation, and limited healthcare access create ideal conditions for disease transmission.

At Kigonze camp in Ituri province, home to more than 15,000 displaced people, at least 30 deaths have been reported since early May. Aid workers and witnesses reported that many victims experienced symptoms commonly associated with Ebola, including fever, severe headaches, and vomiting. Resistance to testing among residents and families initially pre vented health officials from confirming the causes of death.

Funding reductions have further complicated containment efforts. Support for water, sanitation, and hygiene programs has declined sharply, reducing access to handwashing facilities and safe sanitation infrastructure that are critical for limiting Ebola transmission.

This Medical News report highlights how conflict, displacement, underfunded healthcare systems, and declining humanitarian support are creating conditions that could allow the outbreak to worsen significantly. With health officials warning that the epidemic has not yet reached its peak, urgent international assistance, expanded surveillance, stronger infection-control measures, and sustained community engagement will be essential to preventing further loss of life and protecting vulnerable populations across the region.
