Chinese health authorities have reported four additional human infections with avian influenza A(H9N2) virus to the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Region during the reporting period of 24 to 30 July 2026, adding to growing concerns among global infectious disease experts. The latest infections come just weeks after three other H9N2 cases were reported between 22 and 26 June 2026, bringing the total to seven confirmed human infections in China within a remarkably short period.

Health experts fear the apparent increase could indicate that many more mild or undetected infections are circulating in the community. There are also increasing concerns that continued viral circulation in poultry could eventually give rise to a more transmissible strain capable of spreading more efficiently among humans.
Latest Patients Span Four Provinces
The four newly reported patients were geographically dispersed, suggesting the infections were not linked to a single outbreak. They included a 72-year-old woman from Jiangxi Province who developed symptoms on 5 July 2026, a 12-year-old boy from Jiangsu Province whose illness began on 6 July, a 3-year-old girl from Gansu Province with symptom onset on 11 July, and a 58-year-old woman from Yunnan Province who became ill on 13 July.
Exposure investigations found that one patient had direct contact with live poultry, while the remaining three had potential exposure through visits to live poultry stalls or wet markets. Two patients who had underlying chronic respiratory diseases required hospitalization before being discharged after recovery. The other two experienced mild illness, did not require hospitalization, and had fully recovered by the time the cases were reported.
Earlier June Cases Highlight Ongoing Transmission
The latest infections follow three earlier H9N2 cases announced by the WHO from China. Those cases involved a 4-year-old boy from Guangxi Province with symptom onset on 26 June 2026, another 4-year-old boy from Jiangsu Province who became ill on 22 June, and a 44-year-old man from Guangdong Province with symptom onset on 26 June. All three individuals had documented exposure to live poultry.
The two young children developed only mild symptoms and recovered completely. However, the adult patient had underlying medical conditions and remained in intensive care while receiving treatment, illustrating how pre-existing illnesses can contribute to more severe disease outcomes.
Long-Term Surveillance Shows Persistent Human Infections
According to WHO surveillance data, a total of 177 laboratory-confirmed human H9N2 infections have been reported in the Western Pacific Region since 2015, including two deaths, both involving patients with underlying medical conditions. China accounts for 174 of these infections, while Cambodia has reported two cases and Viet Nam has reported one.
