A highly unusual cluster of locally acquired malaria infections around Frankfurt Airport has become more serious after German health authorities confirmed another death and an additional infection, bringing the outbreak to eight cases and three fatalities.

Infections Extend Beyond Airport Workers
The two newly reported patients lived in the Schwanheim district near Frankfurt Airport but had neither traveled to a malaria-endemic country nor worked at the airport. Officials believe they were most likely infected by mosquitoes inadvertently transported into Germany aboard aircraft.
Their cases follow six infections identified among Frankfurt Airport employees in late August. Two of those workers died, meaning the latest fatality raises the outbreak death toll to three.
Importantly, health authorities reported no additional malaria cases since the beginning of the week, although surveillance remains important because of the exceptional circumstances surrounding the cluster.
Doctors Warned About Unexpected Malaria
Because malaria is extremely uncommon in Germany, physicians may not initially suspect the disease when patients have no history of international travel. Such diagnostic delays can allow an infection to progress and increase the possibility of severe complications.

Mosquitoes Likely Arrived by Aircraft
Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites transmitted through bites from infected Anopheles mosquitoes. Symptoms can include high fever, chills, headaches, nausea, and potentially life-threatening complications.
Authorities emphasized that malaria is not ordinarily transmitted directly between people. The suspected mechanism in Frankfurt is known as airport malaria, in which an infected mosquito survives an aircraft journey from a malaria-endemic region and subsequently bites someone near the destination airport.
Rare Outbreak Carries Important Warning
The Frankfurt cluster demonstrates how imported mosquitoes can occasionally produce malaria infections far outside endemic regions, while the three deaths underline the importance of rapid recognition, testing, and treatment when unexplained fever occurs around major international airports.
