Medical News: Winter Surveillance Detects Mild Increase in COVID-19 Activity
New South Wales has recorded a rise in COVID-19 infections during the latest respiratory surveillance period, with health officials confirming 1,098 new notifications for the week ending June 27, 2026. The figure represents a 7.5 percent increase from the previous reporting week. This
Medical News report highlights that despite the increase, NSW Health continues to classify overall COVID-19 activity as remaining at a low level while closely monitoring trends through July.

winter virus circulation
Young Children and Sydney Districts Record Highest Notifications
The latest surveillance data show that infections were most common among children aged 0 to 4 years. Western Sydney and South Western Sydney Local Health Districts also recorded the highest notification rates. Year-to-date, New South Wales has documented 22,827 COVID-19 cases. Sentinel laboratory testing showed positivity increasing modestly to 3.2 percent, reflecting continued community transmission during Australia's winter respiratory virus season.
Severe Illness Indicators Continue to Remain Stable
Encouragingly, the rise in notifications has not translated into greater pressure on the healthcare system. Emergency department presentations and hospital admissions linked to COVID-19 remained stable throughout the reporting period. Wastewater surveillance also detected only low concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 genetic material across monitored catchments, providing additional evidence that widespread transmission remains limited.
Meanwhile, respiratory syncytial virus continues circulating at high levels, while influenza activity is increasing but is still officially categorized as low. Health experts note that these seasonal patterns are typical during winter, when several respiratory viruses circulate simultaneously.
Health Authorities Continue Close Monitoring
Officials attribute the modest increase to expected fluctuations associated with an endemic respiratory virus supported by population immunity from previous infections and vaccination campaigns. They continue recommending COVID-19 and influenza vaccination for older adults, immunocompromised individuals, and people with chronic medical conditions, while also emphasizing hand hygiene and staying home when experiencing respiratory symptoms. Current surveillance findings indicate that although notifications have risen slightly, there is no evidence of a meaningful increase in severe disease, and ongoing monitoring will determine whether this gradual upward trend persists through the coming weeks.
