Medical News: A Hidden Health Crisis Affecting Millions
A surprising new survey by the American Heart Association (AHA) has revealed that nearly nine out of ten adults in the United States have never heard of cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome—a newly recognized health condition that actually affects almost 90 percent of the population. CKM syndrome refers to the combined and interlinked issues of heart disease, kidney disease, obesity, and diabetes, all of which drastically increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.
Most Americans Unaware of a New Silent Medical Syndrome Affecting 90 percent of Americans!
According to researchers from the American Heart Association, the study highlights an urgent need to raise awareness of how the heart, kidneys, and metabolism are deeply interconnected. Midway through this
Medical News report, it is emphasized that CKM syndrome is not an isolated illness but a cluster of related disorders driven by shared lifestyle and biological risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar, excess weight, and poor kidney function.
Understanding the CKM Connection
Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, FAHA, the American Heart Association’s Chief Medical Officer for Prevention, explained that it’s common for people to have heart, kidney, and metabolic issues simultaneously, yet most patients and even some healthcare providers treat them separately. “Once the CKM connection was defined, nearly three-quarters of respondents recognized its importance and expressed interest in learning more,” he said. The good news, he added, is that CKM syndrome can be managed or even reversed through lifestyle changes—especially with healthy eating, regular exercise, and proper medical care.
The Body’s Interlinked Systems
The metabolic system regulates how energy is produced, stored, and used in the body. When it malfunctions, it can affect both the heart and kidneys. Similarly, poor kidney health can worsen cardiovascular problems, while heart failure can impair kidney function and disrupt metabolism. This dangerous cycle reinforces itself unless managed early, which is why the AHA is preparing the first-ever clinical guidelines on CKM syndrome, scheduled for release in early 2026.
What the Survey Revealed
The AHA survey found that:
-88% of Americans have never heard of CKM syndrome.
-79% believe understanding CKM health is important, and 72% want to learn more.
-68% wrongly think individual conditions should be treated separately.
-42% are unaware that a heart problem can worsen due to kidney or metabolic dysfunction.
Most respondents wanted more information on how CKM syndrome is diagnosed and treated—showing that public education could be key to reducing widespread health risks.

A Call to Action for Prevention and Awareness
The AHA’s CKM Health Initiative is launching national educational campaigns and online tools to help people understand their heart, kidney, and metabolic health together. The organization is also encouraging doctors and healthcare providers to adopt a more collaborative approach to managing patients with overlapping health conditions.
Dr. Sanchez urged, “CKM health is about your overall well-being. Regular checks of blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, blood sugar, and kidney function can make all the difference.”
