Medical News: Early Signs Point to a Possible Summer COVID Wave
California is showing fresh signs of increasing COVID-19 activity as municipal wastewater surveillance detects growing virus circulation across several communities. Although current levels remain well below those seen last summer, health experts are closely monitoring the latest trends as travel season accelerates.
Wastewater surveillance reveals COVID-19 transmission is increasing across several California communities
as summer travel intensifies
According to WastewaterSCAN, COVID-19 levels are currently high in San Francisco, Palo Alto and San Jose. Moderate viral activity has also been detected in Novato, Napa, Sunnyvale and Fremont, suggesting transmission is spreading across multiple parts of the state.
Experts Say Seasonal Pattern Is Emerging
Former Marin County health officer Dr. Matt Willis described the latest increase as the “stirrings of a summer surge.” He explained that researchers are still learning how SARS-CoV-2 behaves because it remains a relatively new virus, making its seasonal patterns less predictable than those of other respiratory infections.
Despite the recent uptick, Willis stressed that the Bay Area has experienced very low COVID-19 activity since last fall. WastewaterSCAN data also show that although virus levels in San Francisco have climbed during the past 21 days, they remain substantially lower than those recorded during the same period last year.

Medical News report highlights that California may now be experiencing stronger summer COVID waves than winter ones. Willis added that if infections continue increasing, health authorities could eventually recommend indoor masking once again to reduce transmission.
Nationwide Trends Also Raise Concerns
Beyond California, wastewater surveillance shows moderate COVID-19 activity across the Northeast, while the Southern United States is reporting high viral levels, indicating that summer transmission is becoming increasingly widespread.
The latest wastewater findings reinforce the importance of continuous surveillance, helping health officials identify rising transmission early, guide timely public health responses, and prepare communities before infections accelerate further.
