Thailand’s rapidly aging population is adding new urgency to the country’s push toward artificial intelligence-powered healthcare, with health technology specialists warning that AI alone will not transform hospitals unless reliable and interconnected data becomes the foundation of the system.

At InterSystems Asia READY 2026 in Bangkok, healthcare and technology leaders highlighted how Thailand and other Asia-Pacific countries are moving beyond simply digitizing medical information toward what InterSystems calls Practical AI—technology designed to solve specific clinical and operational problems.
InterSystems Corporation is a privately held global software and data technology provider founded in 1978 and headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. The company specializes in high-performance data management, interoperability, and healthcare information technology, providing technology infrastructure and platforms used across healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and supply-chain industries in more than 80 countries. InterSystems argues that healthcare organizations should not begin their AI journey by selecting the most sophisticated technology. Instead, hospitals need high-quality data that can move between systems and be incorporated into real clinical workflows.
Thailand Faces Mounting Demographic Pressure
Thailand’s demographic transformation makes this particularly important. People aged 65 and older now account for approximately 15 to 16 percent of the population, while those under 15 represent only around 12 to 13 percent.
This increasingly aged population is expected to place greater pressure on healthcare services, particularly through chronic diseases and conditions requiring continuous treatment.
The workforce challenge is equally significant. Data presented at the conference indicated that Thailand has approximately one doctor per 1,000 people, compared with about 2.5 doctors per 1,000 in Malaysia.
Technology that reduces administrative work, speeds information retrieval, and enables healthcare professionals to spend more time with patients could therefore become increasingly valuable.
Three Pillars for AI Ready Healthcare

Trusted Data means information must be accurate, high quality, and accompanied by sufficient context. Incomplete or inaccurate source information limits AI’s ability to analyze cases or support decisions.

Interoperability allows information from electronic health records, laboratories, imaging systems, and other platforms to be exchanged and reused. Practical AI then applies that information to real problems, including locating patient information, summarizing records, supporting documentation, and assisting physician workflows.

AI Native EHRs Could Change Doctors Workflows
Don Woodlock outlined the evolution toward AI-Native EHRs, where artificial intelligence is integrated into electronic health record design rather than added as an isolated feature.
One example is the Natural Language Experience, which allows doctors to search medical records using text or voice. Instead of navigating numerous menus, a physician could request information such as a patient’s drug allergies or previous test results.
Another approach, Ambient Orchestration, involves AI processing doctor-patient conversations and using the information to support subsequent workflows, potentially including preparation of prescriptions or other documentation. Importantly, doctors continue reviewing and approving the resulting information. The objective is to reduce time spent entering data and completing paperwork while increasing time available for direct patient communication and care.

Connected Records Could Reduce Duplicate Tests
Interoperability could also change what happens when patients move between healthcare facilities.
If a patient travels from Chiang Rai to Bangkok for treatment, for example, connected systems could allow physicians to access previous test results and medical history from the originating hospital. Doctors could then use existing information when making treatment decisions and potentially avoid unnecessary repeat testing.

AI may additionally transform clinical information into understandable instructional or educational materials, helping patients better understand their care.
Research from MIT presented at the event indicated that a system providing hospital staff in Indonesia with rapid access to information could reduce examination time by approximately five minutes per case. However, this does not automatically translate into an equivalent increase in patient capacity because treatment procedures, staffing levels, and individual facility constraints remain important.
Thailand and Indonesia Need Different AI Strategies
Regional demographic differences mean healthcare AI cannot follow a single formula.
Thailand’s priorities center on older people, chronic diseases, continuity of care, reducing repeated tests, and improving workforce efficiency.
Indonesia faces a different challenge. Approximately 57 to 58 percent of its population is under 35, while the material presented at the conference indicated only about 0.5 doctors per 10,000 people, equivalent to roughly one doctor per 20,000.
Indonesia consequently has a stronger need to expand healthcare access while using data for proactive care and prevention. Its SATUSEHAT initiative aims to connect health information nationally so data can support prevention and health-risk monitoring.
Smart Hospitals Need Smarter Data Architecture
Scott Gnau also highlighted Architecture by Design and a Single Integrated Platform, where information and software components are incorporated into one architecture instead of creating multiple layers of connected systems.
Such an approach can reduce data transfers, simplify infrastructure management, and establish a common dataset that reduces duplication and inconsistencies. APIs and data mapping can simultaneously connect legacy technologies that hospitals cannot immediately replace.
Nevertheless, architecture decisions must reflect each organization’s structure, security requirements, data governance, and existing systems.
Thailand Builds Links Between Hospitals and Insurers
Thailand is already exploring broader healthcare data connectivity. InterSystems and DataOne began collaborating in February 2026 on infrastructure designed to exchange data between healthcare facilities and insurance companies.
The initiative includes Electronic Claims and Automated Claims, with the goal of reducing document handling, duplicate data entry, and manual processes. More systematic claims processing could also allow hospital resources to be redirected toward patient services.
The broader message from Asia READY 2026 is that the healthcare AI race may ultimately be determined less by spectacular algorithms than by whether hospitals can make their existing information trustworthy, accessible, interoperable, and genuinely useful. For an aging Thailand facing chronic disease pressures and limited medical personnel, measurable gains such as faster information retrieval, reduced paperwork, fewer duplicate tests, and better-supported clinical decisions could make AI an important workforce multiplier rather than a replacement for healthcare professionals. Building Smart Hospitals therefore begins not simply with artificial intelligence, but with the data infrastructure that allows intelligence to work safely and effectively.
