Spain reported a record of more than 72,900 new COVID-19 infections on Thursday but the death rates were not released. The northeastern Spanish region of Catalonia won court approval for a night curfew on Thursday as Madrid pledged to distribute millions of more test kits to tackle the Omicron variant that is driving up infections and overshadowing Christmas.

The Health Ministry in Italy reported 44,595 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday – a record number since the pandemic began. Italy also recorded 168 deaths in the last 24 hours.

On Thursday, Germany recorded 44,927 new cases within 24 hours and 425 deaths related to Covid-19. Overall, 109,749 people have died from coronavirus since the pandemic began. The first person in Germany has died with the Omicron coronavirus variant, the country's public health agency, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), said Thursday. Data from the RKI shows that the person was between the age of 60 and 79.

The United States recorded a new high of 248,427 New COVID-19 infections and 1,063 new COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours. A total of 834,359 Americans have died from COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

Latest COVID-19 News is showing that COVID-19 infections have begun rising again across the six Gulf Arab states after months of low or falling figures. The resurgence comes as the UAE is welcoming millions of visitors to the Expo 2020 Dubai world fair and other seasonal events. The number of COVID-19 cases in the United Arab Emirates soared past the 1,000 mark on Thursday, representing a 50 percent increase from the previous day’s figures. The Ministry of Health and Prevention said that a total of 1,002 new COVID-19 cases were detected over the previous 24 hours – up from 665 cases on Wednesday, 452 cases on Tuesday, and 301 cases on Monday.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked chiefs of states to ramp up oxygen supplies and strengthen health infrastructure to contain a possible surge of Omicron cases ahead of the festive season, as gatherings in public spaces and markets grow in size. The country has recorded 236 Omicron coronavirus cases across 16 states over the last 24 hours, the federal health ministry said, more than double from last week.

Despite three studies that were released claiming that Omicron infections results in lesser disease severity and hospitalizations, as the Omicron variant exponentially spreads, countries are still witnessing an increase in hospitalizations and deaths and the period approaching the New Year is seeming ly gloomier and the forecast for 2022 does not seem the least good.

However strangely and stupidly, officials at the World Health Organization said that the global pandemic should come to an end next year!

“2022 must be the end of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, speaking Wednesday at the organization’s last planned briefing of the year on the coronavirus.

Tedros said he believed the pandemic will end next year because, two years into the situation, “we know the virus very well and we have all the tools to fight it."

He said WHO projections show that vaccine supplies should be sufficient to vaccinate the entire global adult population and to give boosters to high-risk populations by the first quarter of 2022.

The big issues to overcome were “implementing all the tools effectively” and notably, “taking care of equity.”

We at Thailand Medical News totally disagree with the WHO’s prediction. Rather even with the studies claiming that Omicron is milder, we expect that 2022 will be far worst that the previous two years. All the studies on the Omicron did not take into consideration the specific Omicron sub-lineages that have already emerged and and the fact that the Omicron variant is rapidly evolving and still spewing out mutations and deletions and conformational changes. We expect to see more Omicron sub-lineages and constant reinfections with these newer Omicron sub-lineages. The world has also stopped focusing on the newer Delta sub-variants that are also constantly emerging. With the stupid approval by the US FDA of Merck’s Molnupiravir drug in the last few hours, we expect some really interesting new strains to emerge. 2022 will simply be the start of the catastrophic phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. the worse has yet to come and its all been driven by the the wrong strategies and initiatives of the medical and pharmaceutical industry ie focus on antibody based therapeutics.
