Medical News: COVID-19 on the Rise Again Across Spanish Regions
Spain is currently seeing a significant uptick in COVID-19 infections and related hospitalizations, according to the latest national report from the SiVIRA (Sistema de Vigilancia de Infección Respiratoria Aguda). The data highlights a growing burden on primary care facilities and hospitals across the country, with increases in both confirmed cases and serious outcomes such as pneumonia, ICU admissions, and fatalities.
COVID-19 Surges in Spain with Positivity Rates at 14.8 Percent and Lethality
Rates for Hospitalized Patients at 7.6 Percent!
This
Medical News report is based on the surveillance of acute respiratory infections (IRAs) across the autonomous communities, with figures weighted to present a national average and covers approximately June 2-8, 2025.
The COVID-19 syndrome incidence rate has risen to 10.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, up from 9.6 cases the previous week. Meanwhile, the positivity rate for SARS-CoV-2 in primary care testing climbed to 14.8%, reinforcing the trend of a nationwide rebound in transmission.
Hospitalization Rates Indicate Growing Strain on Healthcare System
In hospitals, the weekly COVID-19-related admission rate remains steady at 1.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants but positivity among hospitalized patients increased to 11.4% from 10%, pointing to a growing proportion of hospital admissions testing positive.
These numbers are indicative of a gradual surge, particularly affecting the elderly and chronically ill. Since the beginning of the monitoring season, 25.7% of COVID-19 hospital patients developed pneumonia, 3.9% required intensive care, and 7.6% eventually died during hospitalization.
Regionally, areas such as Melilla, Ceuta, and the Canary Islands are showing some of the highest IRA incidence rates, with Melilla peaking at 708.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Other high-burden regions include Murcia (405.5), Aragón (433.1), and Madrid (380.2). In contrast, Galicia and the Balearic Islands are experiencing lower levels of activity.
Children Under Five Also Affected
Acute bronchitis and bronchiolitis continue to be widespread among children under five, though with a slight decline. The incidence currently stands at 154.8 cases per 100,000, down from 165.1 the previous week. Though RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) test positivity has dropped to 0% in primary care, hospitals still reported a positivity rate of 10.8%, with severe cases leading to a 4.5% fatality rate and 8.9% ICU admission rate among confirmed patients.
Virological Trends Support Growing COVID-19 Activity
Laboratory surveillance further confirms a higher percentage of SARS-CoV-2 detections among tested samples. Of 386 samples taken in primary care in the past week, 14.8% tested positive. In hospitals, 11.4% of 315 samples tested positive for COVID-19, which underscores the vi
rus's growing community presence.
Influenza and RSV remain low in activity, with flu positivity in hospitals reported at just 1.9%, and RSV at 0%. This shift puts COVID-19 back as the leading respiratory threat at present.
National Mortality Shows Slight Increase
According to mortality estimates, Spain registered 8,305 deaths in Week 23 of 2025, slightly higher than the expected baseline of 7,844. While not all deaths are attributable to COVID-19, this excess mortality trend is being closely monitored.
Conclusion
The recent data from Spain’s SiVIRA respiratory infection monitoring system shows a resurgence in COVID-19 cases, with increasing community transmission rates and growing hospital pressure. While influenza and RSV remain contained for now, the rising SARS-CoV-2 positivity and hospitalization indicators highlight a need for vigilance, especially among vulnerable populations. Regional disparities and growing strain on healthcare services call for renewed attention to infection control strategies and public health communication.
