Dr Burton was addressing the British MPs on the Commons science and technology committee a few hours ago.
Dr Burton added that he expects data in the coming days on how well the Moderna booster improves protection against the Omicron variant.
Dr Burton cautioned against claims, largely from South Africa, that the variant is causing milder disease, and warned that Omicron and Delta are likely to circulate together for some time.
He told the committee, “I do not think Omicron is a milder, less severe version of the current virus.”
He further added, “The idea it will push Delta out of the way and take over may occur in the future, but I think in the coming months these two viruses are going to co-exist, and Omicron, which I would maintain is actually a severe disease, will now infect people on a background of very, very strong Delta pressure.”
He further warned, “It will also lead to a situation where individuals will become co-infected … which gives the opportunity for this SARS-CoV-2 virus to further evolve and mutate which is a concerning and worrying situation.”
He also said that co-infections with two or more variants typically causes a whole list of clinical complications and eventual disease severity.
He told the MPs, “We certainly don’t have to panic, we have many many tools at our disposal, we’ve learnt so much about this virus over the last two years, and we can continue to fight it, but I think Omicron poses a real threat.”
He added, “When you look at the data in South Africa, about 15% of people who are hospitalized are in the intensive care unit, and while there’s variability, if you look back earlier in the year, at a time of Delta surge in August, those numbers are about the same, ie 15%. So, while the mortality rate we are seeing right now is mercifully lower, I think as a disease it is a very fit virus and it’s severe.”
In the last few days and weeks, many stupid and ignorant so-called ‘experts’ along with garbage mainstream media were saying that Omicron was a milder variant
based on superficial and non-properly collated and analyzed data from the primitive health care system in South Africa.
Furthermore, it should be noted that the Omicron variant is still mutating and evolving with two variants already classified and a few more newly emerged ones being studied and classified.

Medical News had accessed are already indicating that a new Omicron sub-variant has already emerged in the UK and is the actual sub-lineage driving the infections. This new sub-lineage has what we had predicted, has minor mutations on its ORF10.

Furthermore, while the world has been too focused on Omicron and the various vaccine efficacy, not much attention has been paid on the ever- emerging Delta sub-variants, some of which are gaining more transmissibility, immune evasiveness and different kinds of pathogenesis patterns. To date, Thailand Medical News believes that there are now more than 167 Delta sub-variants of importance based on data that we have been collating. And already in certain countries, co-infections involving different Delta-subvariants are happening.
As Thailand Medical News had predicted, the key buzzwords in 2022 will be co-infections, recombinant variants or reassorted variants, new zoonotic recombinant variants, ADE, ‘original antigenic sin’ and also viral priming.
