A must for every hospital, Siemens Healthineers has released a couple of AI-driven and cloud-based software applications, one for the brain and one for the prostate, that automate a great deal of the manual tasks that radiologists have to perform.

Both of the applications can be used with data coming from any MRI machine, so they can be deployed by just about any facility using an MRI scanner and scanning the brain and/or prostate.

Thailand Medical News was told, “With the new AI-based assistants, we are expanding our diagnostic offering to help our customers increase efficiency and improve the quality of care. We firmly believe that AI will help physicians deal with their workload and benefit patients by helping achieve an improved, patient-focused decision-making process.”

“We demonstrated this when we introduced the first application of the AI-Rad Companion focusing on CT for the chest body region. We now will present additional AI-Rad Companion applications for MRI examinations in the body regions, brain and prostate. Further applications for radiography and radio oncology will follow for the AI-Rad Companion family.” said Peter Koerte, Head of Digital Health at Siemens Healthineers.

The AI-Rad Companion Brain MR for Morphometry Analysis, without any manual intervention, segments brain images from MRI exams, calculates brain volume, and automatically marks volume deviations in result tables that neurologists rely on for diagnostics and therapeutics. The last part it does by comparing the levels of gray matter, white matter, and cerebrospinal fluid in a given patient’s brain to normal levels. This can help with diagnosing Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other diseases.

The AI-Rad Companion Prostate MR for Biopsy Support, on the other hand, segments the shape of the prostate on MRIs and helps radiologists to spot and outline lesions so that urologists are clear on where to perform biopsies. This is important, as urologists are often faced with written notes and pictograms coming from radiologists that guide them to where to perform a biopsy. Regarding fusion procedures, manual segmentation is no longer necessary, saving valuable time that is normally spent on monotonous manual work.

The technology was unveiled at the recent  RSNA conference in Chicago.Siemens Healthineers is the only progressive imaging company to date , developing AI platforms for use with MRI scanners and imaging platforms for better diagnostic results and also helping for better biopsy or treatment protocol outcomes.
