COVID-19 News: Italy is among the many European countries that are witnessing a surge in COVID-19 infections with hospitals, ICU wards and outpatient clinics across the country busy and overstretched but yet, there is literally no mainstream news coverages or any COVID-19 News coverages by international wire agencies on what is actually happening in many of these European countries.

With the exception of the WHO which publishes weekly reports that are not detailed and most often contain official data released by governments from these countries that do not represent the real state of things as the actual numbers are often much more than what is being reported.

The WHO had in its earlier report listed Italy as one of the many countries that is witnessing a surge of respiratory infection including COVID-19.

Data updated as of the 19th of December 2023 shows that there were more than 225,994 new COVID-19 infections and 1009 COVID-19 deaths in the last 30 days ending on the 19th of December 2023.

During the same period, it was reported that more than 5,720 healthcare workers were also infected by the circulation SARS-CoV-2 sub-lineages, further complicating the situation to already stressed-out public healthcare infrastructure.

Data not yet published shows that COVID-19 infections, COVID-19 hospitalizations and daily COVID-19 deaths are still rising since the last official update on the 20th of December 2023.

A total of 279 Italians died from COVID-19 between the period 21st December 2023 to 27th December 2023.

Reports from physicians and healthcare across Italy are indicating that since the 27th of December 2023, ICU admissions and COVID-19 hospitalizations have been increasing at an exponential rate and many with disease severity needing hospitalization are basically kids under the age of 10 and adults above the age of 55.

Contrary to claims that the JN.1 is a mild variant local doctors are reporting that it is driving disease severity in many especially those with existing comorbidities and also among the aged.

Interestingly, another common observation found is that many of t he ‘recovered’ COVID-19 individuals are that they are developing serious symptoms days or weeks later including strokes, clots, lung and heart issues and also intestinal ischemia.

Thailand Medical News will be providing more updates on the COVID-19 situation in Italy and other European countries as more data is released.
