Stress May Be Fueling Cancer Growth
The researchers explain that long-term psychological stress can activate the body's "fight-or-flight" system, causing increased release of the hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline. These hormones stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors found not only in healthy tissues but also on colorectal cancer cells and within the tumor's surrounding environment.
Once activated, these receptors trigger a chain of biological events that encourage cancer cells to multiply, survive longer, spread to other organs, form new blood vessels, and evade the body's immune defenses. Because beta-blockers prevent these receptors from being activated, scientists believe they may interrupt several processes that tumors rely on to grow.
A Low-Cost Drug with Multiple Possible Benefits
