Hyperparathyroidism Symptoms

Hyperparathyroidism does not always cause symptoms and treatment may not be necessary. In these cases, regular monitoring and a diet containing a balanced amount of calcium may be all that is required. In cases of primary hyperparathyroidism that has led to an elevated calcium level, symptoms may range in severity.

Some of the general symptoms that may be associated with hypercalcemia include:

  • Weak muscles and fatigue
  • Depression
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Constipation and abdominal pain
  • Feeling thirsty and frequent urination (polyuria)
  • Lack of concentration

If the hypercalcemia is left untreated, more severe symptoms may appear. These include:

  • Vomiting
  • Dehydration
  • Confusion and cognitive impairment
  • Drowsiness
  • Bone pain
  • Muscle spasms
  • Arrhythmia
  • High blood pressure
  • Loss of consciousness, coma and even death

In rare cases, hyperparathyroidism can lead to the following complications:

  • Kidney stones
  • Pancreatitis
