COVID-19 News: Remdesivir is a medication that has gained significant attention for its claimed role in treating COVID-19. According to claims by American health ‘experts’, it works by inhibiting the replication of the virus, aiming to reduce the severity of the disease. Approved by the U.S. FDA for emergency use, remdesivir has been a key player in the battle against the pandemic. However, its effects on the body, particularly the liver, have raised some concerns that warrant a closer look.

Previous COVID-19 News coverages that covered studies on Remdesivir also found that it was cardiotoxic and also nephrotoxic.

In fact, its being speculated that many deaths of hospitalized COVID-19 patients could have been caused by the usage of remdesivir!

The Study: A Closer Look at Liver Health
A recent study by a team from Tabriz University of Medical Sciences sought to understand how remdesivir affects the liver. Using 48 Wistar rats, the researchers divided them into eight groups, each receiving different treatments. These included various doses of remdesivir, some combined with dexamethasone (a steroid) and heparin (an anticoagulant), and some groups receiving these drugs alone.

Methodology
The study meticulously tracked changes in liver enzymes, oxidative stress markers, and liver histopathology (the microscopic examination of liver tissue). The goal was to obs erve any potential damage or changes in liver function and structure.

Key Findings
-Liver Enzymes and Pathological Changes:
Remdesivir caused a range of liver issues, from mild to severe. These included cell swelling, vascular congestion, and focal necrosis (death of liver cells).

Notably, the group receiving high-dose remdesivir combined with dexamethasone and heparin showed significant liver damage.

-Oxidative Stress:
Oxidative stress refers to the imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body, leading to cell damage.

The study found elevated levels of oxidative stress markers in rats treated with remdesivir. This suggests that the drug may contribute to liver damage by increasing oxidative stress.

Comparison with Other Treatments
Dexamethasone and heparin, when used alone or in combination with remdesivir, also showed varying degrees of impact on the liver.

The findings highlight the complex interactions between these drugs and their cumulative effects on liver health.

Why This Matters
The liver plays a crucial role in detoxifying the body, producing important proteins, and regulating metabolism. Damage to this vital organ can have serious consequences. The study's findings suggest that while remdesivir is effective in combating COVID-19, its use should be carefully monitored, especially in patients with pre-existing liver conditions.

Recommendations for Patients and Healthcare Providers
Given the potential risks, patients undergoing remdesivir treatment should have their liver function closely monitored. Healthcare providers should be aware of these risks and manage them appropriately. This may include regular blood tests to check liver enzyme levels and adjusting treatment plans if necessary.

Conclusion
Remdesivir remains an important tool in the fight against COVID-19, but its impact on liver health cannot be ignored. This study provides valuable insights into the potential side effects of the drug and underscores the need for careful monitoring and management. As research continues, it is crucial to balance the benefits of remdesivir with its potential risks, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients.

The study findings were published on a preprint server and is currently being peer reviewed.
