According to figures released by the department for disease control at the Thailand’s Ministry for Public Health, COVID-19 hospitalizations are now averaging about 269 cases per day with a significant number of cases needing ICU and mechanical ventilation support.

Local doctors and hospitals are getting concerned as many hospitalized are taking a slightly longer time to recover and hence are not freeing COVID-19 designated beds and are starting to cause a possible shortage of COVID-19 designated beds in many private and even public hospitals and also causing stress on healthcare staff as caseloads accumulate.

In the previous week, there were 1,792 COVID-19 hospitalizations and the week before 1,672 admissions and the trend for the last two months shows high hospital admissions for COVID-19.

It is estimated that between 15 to 24 percent of these hospital admissions need ICU or supplemental oxygen and most patients are taking anything between 3 to 8 weeks for recovery.

As COVID-19 testing is currently limited and mostly only conducted when individuals are exhibiting disease severity, many doctors are concerned that the spread of COVID-19 among the local population could be possibly extensive and could have an impact on the healthcare industry as many are likely to develop Long COVID and other long term medical issues.

Already there are unvalidated claims that incidences of new onset of diabetes, hypertension, chronic fatigue, kidney and liver issues and even neuropsychiatric issues are all possibly rising in Thailand in the last three years and so far many studies have linked even asymptomatic and mild COVID-19 infections to these incidences.  Also, the occurrences of lung fibrosis, strokes, various ischemias and heart issues are all rising with COVID-19 being the main culprit.

New SARS-CoV-2 FLiRT Variants Already Identified In Thailand And Are Spreading
Thailand Medical experts have confirmed the presence of the new SARS-CoV-2 sub-lineages called the FLiRT variants due to the presence of two worrisome mutations on them i.e. F456L & R346T.

These new FLiRT variants have gained attention due to their prevalence and potential impact on disease transmission and severity. The two mutations found on these FLiRT variants also probably makes these new lineages evasive to all kinds of immunity i.e. either by previous infections or via the vaccines or both.

The KP.1.1 and KP.2 sub-lineages are part of these FLiRT variants but recently the debut of yet another new sub-lineage called KP.3 is raising alarms due to its high transmissibility rate.

The KP.3 sub-lineage is expected to the predominant variant globally and also in Thailand the next few weeks and will bring with it an expected COVID-19 surge globally.

Symptoms And Characteristics and of FLiRT Variants
Patients infected with FLiRT variants exhibit symptoms similar to those associated with earlier strains of COVID-19, including respiratory issues, fatigue, fever, cough, sore throat, and others. However, variations in symptoms and disease severity underscore the evolving nature of these variants and their impact on individuals.

It is also being reported that many infected with the KP variants are exhibiting rashes on the palms, more intensive muscular pains and also the presence of lung lesions.
