Four Cases of Hantavirus Infections Involving the Andes Strain Detected in Bolivia

Medical News: Health authorities in South America are intensifying surveillance efforts after four new laboratory-confirmed hantavirus infections were reported in the Tarija region in Bolivia, near the Argentina border. The cases were identified in the municipalities of Bermejo, Yacuiba, and Padcaya, areas that health officials say are increasingly vulnerable because of growing viral circulation in neighboring Argentine provinces such as Orán and Jujuy.

Health officials intensify surveillance after four new hantavirus cases emerge near the Argentina-Bolivia border

The Tarija Departmental Health Service (SEDES) confirmed that the infections were detected through laboratory analysis, triggering epidemiological alerts across several border communities. According to Carlos Angulo, head of Epidemiology at SEDES, the situation is particularly concerning because these border zones experience constant movement of people and goods between Bolivia and Argentina, increasing the risk of viral spread.

Border Regions Identified as High-Risk Zones
Authorities identified Bermejo-Aguas Blancas and Yacuiba-Salvador Mazza as the main high-risk corridors for transmission. Another confirmed case emerged near the Tarija River in Padcaya, an area frequented by fishermen and rural workers.
Health investigators revealed that many infections may be linked to outdoor activities in rodent-infested areas. Fishing camps and poorly ventilated shelters are being closely examined after several infected individuals reportedly visited areas contaminated by rodent excreta before becoming ill.

The virus is primarily spread through exposure to saliva, urine, or feces from infected rodents. The main vector identified in these cases is the long-tailed pygmy rice rat, scientifically known as Oligoryzomys longicaudatus. Infection can occur when contaminated particles become airborne and are inhaled by humans, particularly in enclosed or dusty environments.

Concerns Rise Over Andes Strain Transmission
While several hantavirus strains circulate in South America, officials noted growing concern regarding the Andes strain because of its unique ability to spread from person to person. Unlike other hantavirus variants that are mainly transmitted through rodents, the Andes strain has previously demonstrated human-to-human transmission, especially during close household contact.

This Medical News report highlights that public health officials are now strengthening border surveillance and community awareness campaigns due to fears that increased regional movement could accelerate transmission patterns.

Authorities are also urging residents in rural communities to store food securely, avoid contact with rodents, disinfect enclosed spaces before entering, and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, breathing difficulties, or severe fatigue develop.

Health experts warn that hantavirus infections can rapidly progress into hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a potentially fatal respiratory illness associated with severe lung inflammation and respiratory distress. Early diagnosis remains critical because delayed treatment significantly increases mortality risk.

Public health authorities across the region are expected to continue aggressive monitoring efforts in border municipalities while reinforcing rodent control strategies and public education campaigns. Officials believe that rapid detection, cross-border cooperation, and improved awareness among residents living in rural or fishing communities will be essential to preventing larger outbreaks linked to the Andes strain and other circulating hantavirus variants.
