Who Conducted the Study
The research was carried out by scientists from multiple institutions including Ankara University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Firat University Medical School and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Erzincan Binali Yildirim University Medical School, Samsun Gazi State Hospital, and Kookmin University in South Korea. The wide collaboration added strength and depth to the findings.
How the Study Was Done
The researchers used a well-established laboratory model of sepsis in rats that closely mimics how severe infection spreads in the human body. The animals were divided into several groups including healthy controls untreated sepsis and sepsis treated with cetirizine dexamethasone or a combination of both. Blood and tissue samples were examined within 16 hours to track inflammation immune cell changes and organ damage.
Key Findings Explained Simply
In untreated sepsis animals the immune system became extremely aggressive. White blood cells especially neutrophils surged while protective lymphocytes dropped. At the same time harmful inflammatory messengers such as TNF alpha and several interleukins rose sharply. These changes are known to drive organ injury and failure.
One of the most important discoveries was the sharp drop in a protective molecule called Maresin 1. This substance normally helps the body switch off inflammation and begin healing. Lower Maresin 1 levels were strongly linked to higher inflammation and worse liver damage.
When cetirizine or dexamethasone was given the immune response became more balanced. Inflammation markers dropped immune cell levels improved and Maresin 1 levels rose again. The most impressive results were seen when both drugs were used together showing reduced liver injury and more controlled immune activity.
Why This Matters
The study suggests that Maresin 1 could become an early warning signal for sepsis severity and progression. Even more importantly it shows that combining an antihistamine with a steroid may help calm the immune storm without completely shutting down the body&
;rsquo;s defenses.
